I Hate It When People Misuse "literally"!

Recommended Posts

Lately I've noticed an epidemic of sorts...people, even people who 'speak' for a living and should know better, are misusing the word literally.

A girl checking me out at the grocery store said, "I literally died!" during our brief conversation. I wanted to gently correct her, but I didn't. I just inwardly cringed and gathered my things.

I also can't stand the ridiculous overuse of "like" these days.

What are your grammar pet peeves?

That is hilarious!!!! Amazing how a dead person could be grocery shopping......

My pet peeve is when people say fustrating instead of frustrating - come on, did we miss 3rd grade English Class?

Oooooh I am with you on this. I usually bite my tongue though the urge to correct is strong.

One of my own pet peeves is apostrophe abuse. I passed a store the other day advertising that they were selling "banana's" for 99 cents a kilo. They had similar sales on "apple's" and "cabbage's".

I cringe when someone says "expecially" instead of "especially"

Most of my pet peeves are written. For example, when people use an apostrophe to make a word plural and when people use the wrong your and you're. There are plenty more but I usually just cringe inwardly and go on.

I homeschool my sons and we go over these common mistakes frequently so that they hopefully won't make them.

Speaking in "ebonics", instant messaging short spelling, loud and obnoxious cell phone users... Oh, was I supposed to just list one? :-)

My kids have always called me the Grammar Nazi... Today, language is simply based on lazy behavior.

amazing how the English language has suffered over the years... along with acryonyms and such with texting, it's even worse! (wow, I hope I spelled "acryonyms" right) ... what I miss is common courtesy ... what happened to "please", "thank you" and "you're welcome"?

I noticed a spelling error in my post. Does that mean I'm kicked off this thread?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
