Bullsh*t!!! Yes, maybe doc has a good reason for saying it, but IMO can do far more damage than good!! Yes of course there are always ways to tweak a diet or routine but 1200 calories is roughly what it takes to sustain organ health in a bed-ridden patient. He is a surgeon, but unless he is a dietician also his opinion should be taken with a grain of salt.

Everyone is different, you have received some good advice from various sources (including those who say you must listen to surgeon- some people are eating solids 6 days out!!!!!!) but now is time for you to do what works for you.

If you feel comfortable with this routine, great! If you hit a stall and want to try something new, great! But be careful and always listen to your body first!!!

Good luck, God bless!!!

Awesome job on the weightloss!!

I would think of it like this: a larger person can lose lots of weight eating 1000-1200 cals a day but once you start losing weight you should lower it to 800 so that weightloss can continue. I have no idea about the 3 meals a day thing though... I think 6 meals is better especially because the meal sizes are so small, we should be eating more often.

congrats on losing 101 lbs!

my doctor told me i should only eat 2 meals a day... so at least yours wants you to eat 3.

i am sorry to sound rude or mean, i don't have that intent.. but i have to ask.. why did you bother having surgery and why does everyone suggest for everyone else that you follow what your doctor says to a t... then you go get a checkup & blow off what your doctor says, because you think you know better?... i mean... why did you go to him in the first place, if you don't want to listen to him?

did you ask him why he wanted you to cut back on your food intake?.. personally, i don't let my doctor leave the room until he answers all my questions to my satisfaction. i do my own research about things online & i come to forums like this & then i ask him why he wants me to do or take certain things.. and i tell him right then if i'm willing to do it or not. lol i mean.. i want him to know what i'm doing to myself, so he can help me.. he saved my life once already.. but i let him know when i'm not comfortable with something or if i don't understand or whatever.

if you go the medical route, then you have to believe that the doctors are supposed to be there to help you & there's a reason he wants you to eat the way he said....

take my opinion cum grano salis (with a grain of salt)..

Hi nyxa, just from an anthropological standpoint- even what surgeons or other medical "experts" say should also be taken with a grain of salt. There are some things that are really agreed upon across the spectrum but other things are debatable but portrayed as truth! I think this is one of those things that is debatable and drs aren't all amenable to debate! They believe what they say is gold standard. And shut down any input from the patient. Medicine should be a reciprocal relationship, not a power play! You may have confidence to question dr to face, not everyone does :(

:) oh hope this doesn't come across as an attack, just a different opinion based on what you said :)

I GIess I don't really understand what your trying to say here.

They're saying if it ain't broke don't fix it! 1200 calories is a good amount. Yes for weightloss 800 is better, or 600, or none! We could eat nothing and lose heaps!!! Lol, been there. If you're a normalish bmi adult with medium activity level anything under 2000 calories (or a little more when in training) is fine. Anything else is nitpicking/fine tuning/a process.

The op is 6 months out and some surgeons/ dieticians/ nutritionists/pcp's would suggest increasing cals at this point and ensuring a good routine.

Yesterday was my 6 month checkup with my surgeon. I was so excited to go to the appointment because Tuesday I reached 101 lb weight loss.

Instead of telling me how good I was doing' date=' I got a lecture about eating too much! He asked me what I ate the day before and I told him Greek yogurt and a sugar free Starbucks frap for Breakfast, tilapia for lunch, premier Protein shake mid afternoon, chicken for dinner and a sugar free Popsicle for snack. He said I am eating 5 times a day and should only be eating 3 meals a day.

He also said I am eating too many calories. I get in between 1000 and 1200 a day, but I do 40 minutes on the treadmill at least 5 times a week which burns more than 300 calories. He said I should only eat 3 times a day and stay between 600 and 800 calories a day. Then he said forget about the calories all together and just eat 3 small meals and I will do fine.

I am really struggling with his advice. What I am doing is working just fine. I am very happy losing 101 lbs in a little over 6 months. I've decide not to follow his advice and to stick with what is working for me. I've NEVER hit a stall and the weight loss has been steady. Why mess with it?

How much is everyone else eating at 6 months out?[/quote']

Good Lord......101 lbs in 6 months and he's lecturing you about what you're doing WRONG? That's averaging over 4 lbs a week! That is fantastic loss for a surgery that doesn't have much in the way of malsorption! Thank God he's not my doctor or he'd be picking his teeth out of his poo for a few days. That makes me mad. You're doing great, just keep doing what you're doing since it's working and your happy with your loss. Incredible success as far as I'm concerned, so Well done, and I solute you!

Cheers :-)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
