Food Addiction And Wls

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering if there are any sleevers out there who also struggle wih food addiction? I have not been sleeved yet, but worry that I won't be successful because I have such a bad relationship with food. What an emotional eater, I am!!! Will weight loss be impossible for me?

No, it shouldn't be a problem for you because after wls you can't really eat that much and eventually you become disinterested in food.< /p>

I was Sleeved on June 5th and so far i've lost 70lbs, so it's possible. It's hard, but it is possible. I'm proof of that. I am a big time food addict. Always have been, and just like any Alcoholic or Drug Addict, I always will be. It's a struggle daily to stay away from things I know I shouldn't be having. I would much rather be eating something way bad for me any chance I get.

I just keep reminding myself why I got sleeved. I think about how my life has been the last how many years, stashed away in the house hiding from the world, watching life go by. I refuse to live like that any longer. So when I get the desire for something bad to eat instead I opt for something healthy. My go to snack of late is baby carrots and celery sticks with hummus to dip them in. When I really want to feel like I'm cheating I'll have a sugar free popsicle or fudgesicle. That's not saying we can't still eat pretty much anything we want from time to time. I've spoiled myself and had stuff I know I probably shouldn't have had. I just had it in moderation, and on rare occasions.

I am also a food addict! I have not been sleeved yet but am hoping the sleeve in assist in helping me to now allow me to turn to food when I'm bored or upset. I'm hoping it helps to push me to exercise or turn my emotions in another direction other than food.

I am def a food addict. I think about food all the time! I was sleeved 10 days ago and it's been hard. A few family events with lots of my fav food. I tried a small pretzle and that made me puke. I plan on making sure every bite I will put in my mouth is worth every calorie. I also know if I eat crap I will lose my hair and I dont have much of that to begin with so. I had a bad post op experience and keep telling all this pain and misery has to be for something and I will never go back to the way I was

I am 6 months out, and I am a food addict. I am only down 42 lbs....down 2 this week after a 5 week stall. So for me, 38 lbs to go. I think about food a lot. Some days are worse than others. I am hoping that I will become less interested in food as time goes by. I am over 50, so I think losing may be a little harder. I say if I can do it, anyone can. I might be slow, but I'm still a LOSER. And honestly, if I never lost another lb., I would still be happy I had the surgery. I fall into the overweight category now, and for that, I am thankful. Of course, I will try to get to goal, and believe that I eventually will.

I was (am) a food addict. I had to wait 6 months die to insurance guidelines and during that time I got counciling. I addressed and dealt with all of my issues, learned my triggers, and am successful in my surgery losing 100 pounds so far.

It is still hard after surgery. Physically you become disinterested in food but it's all there mentally. You can still eat most foods. In smaller quantities but you can eat more often.

My advice is seek counciling and deal with the issues that make you over eat. It will be quite worth it!

I'm an emotional eater / binge eater. I was sleeved about 15 months ago, and I've lost most of the weight I hoped to (passed my surgeon's goal, reached normal weight), but I'm still about 10 pounds from my dream goal, and I know it's because I still fight with those bad eating habits. This doesn't mean you shouldn't get the sleeve, but it does mean you're still going to have to work on those issues to be successful and keep the weight off. The good news is, the sleeve helps a lot, and particularly in the first months provides such restriction that it really boosts your efforts to develop better habits. But the key is building those good habits and sticking to them, and getting some help dealing with the emotional / mental aspects of why you're overeating. The sleeve hasn't solved my eating problems, but it's sure a lot better to be fighting emotional eating from that place of emotional strength and self-confidence that losing so much weight can get you to! After a few months of watching the numbers on the scale plummet, you'll find just about anything else in your life seems conquerable.

Thanks you to every single one of you that responded. You all have relieved so many stressors....a priceless gift!! I appreciate you all taking the time to share with me and help. I don't know why, but I'm always surprised when people choose to do that for me.

As for the food addiction, it looks like counseling and determination will be the two secrets to my success. I can do it!!!

I find myself not hungry at all. If i didnt have reminders on my phone, id forget to eat. To me now eating is like filling up the gas tank. It is much less about the experience, and trust me i loved the experience. To a tune of 357 lbs. Just had my one month post op and i'm at 261 today. You will really be surprised how little food interest you. It actaully freaked me out at first.

Max- oh I dream of your scenario; to not think of food. That alone would make it all worth it.

Pretty- wow. That is totally inspirational. Thank you!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
