51 And Conflicted Between The Band And The Sleeve- Your Thoughts Wanted!

Recommended Posts

Buplee,

I also just decided today that I am going to go with the sleeve. The past 7 years I have wanted the band but after researching and chatting with some people on here and on the lap band site it really is a better choice. As long as everything goes well and you have a good doctor. I am in the process of having Dr. Alveraz as my doc in Mexico, since I'm self pay. He is very popular on this site. Good luck! It's just nerves. I'm right there with you. Lol! Take care.

My surgeon is near giving up on the band completely due to the high complication rates. He does nearly (I'm told) as many band to sleeve revisions as he does bands alone.

My doc dislikes the band as well. I'd imagine more surgeons will go the route of phasing them out eventually.

I never considered the band after watching a family member and her complications with one. Just not worth the headache.

Hi,

I just had my band removed last week and got the sleeve. I soooooo wish I had this option 5 years ago when I did the band! I was so ready to get that band out of me.

Go with your feelings and good luck!

Cheers, Dottie

I know I am coming to this thread late, but I had the lapband for 10 years and I can just say, it is harder to live with then the sleeve. I never had reflux until I was banded, but went through hell with the band when I had any fill at all. When I had to have all the Fluid removed, I regained the lost weight.

I used to think that the band was less drastic then other choices, but i am not so sure.

i saw pictures taken of my stomach right before they removed the band. It was completely encased in scar tissue - you couldn't actually see the band. My boy apparently thought it was pretty invasive.

I was going to get the band but after much reading called and told my doctor I wanted to be sleeved instead. I agree with others...the band is not totally reversible due to the damage it leaves behind. I also didnt like the idea of having this thing inside of me for life...Who knows if i will always have a job or insurance???? I would hate to think of an emergency coming up with the band and me not having insurance. With the sleeve, I am done.....no maintenance

Thank God I was talked out of the sleeve by my surgeon. I was sleeved (at age 58) 11 months ago and just reached my goal weight today!!!!! Good luck to all of you.

I am now jumping though some more hoops for Aetna so I can be approved this time around. I was denied two weeks ago. I initially asked for approval for the band, but after feedback from the great people on this forum and more research, I hope to get approved for the sleeve this time around.

My surgeon told me he is taking out more bands then putting in. I'm convinced sleeve was right for me. I didnt want to deal with fills and risk of infection, slips.

Go with the sleeve! The more research you do you will find the sleeve is the best long term solution.

Thank you all for your respective posts and support. I am no longer conflicted and will get the sleeve once I am approved by Aetna.

Great news buplee! Keep us posted and hope the approval process isn't too painful; I am so grateful I didn't have to go through that; I understand the need for it, but it sounds so bureaucratic and painful and long. So hang in there!

Thank you. I was supposed to have surgery on 9/27, but Aetna declined me and made me jump through some more hoops. I have my last nutritionist appointment today and hope to get approved and have surgery later this month or in November. Keep your fingers crossed that I get approved by Aetna very soon.

I am writing this at 3 am on the morning. I got another surgery date of 10/23 pending final approval from Aetna. I fell down the stairs in my house three times this week including one down the entire stairway from second level of my house. I found out during a MRI after an trip to the emergency room that I had a severely herniated disc pressing into my sciatic nerve causing weakness and numbness. I am scheduled for spinal surgery today at 12 or 1 pm today, but hoping this does not delay the sleeve, but will help due to weight complication. Has anyone had an unexpected illness or surgery but still got sleeved in the same month? I am hoping to get both out of the way this month. Keep me in mind this afternoon and I will check in when I am able given I will be morphine or another powerful painkiller.

Best wishes to my fellow pre- and post- op sleevers.

I'm sending healing prayers your way today! Don't worry about your sleeve surgery. Just focus on getting through today and healing from this trauma first. I pulled a groin muscle Laredo August-out of work 3 weeks-I couldn't get up/down or lift leg to climb stairs! I was so worried about postponing my 10/11/12 surgery date. I called my surgeon, leaving detailed messages about my condition in case I had to postpone. Dr. never called back. I decided to wait and see. Returned to work 2 weeks before surgery after using up all my sick time! Was still sore and a little limited in movement, but had my VSG last Thurs. I'm glad I had it, but moving my body after surgery was very difficult. Nurses don't really help you get in and out of bed-you're on your own. Ouch!! So, my advice is to make sure you are strong enough to be able to reposition yourself in bed, get in and out of bed without assistance, and be able to walk to get gas out. Good luck!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
