Does Our B12 Have To Be Sublingual?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering, do we have to take our B12 as sublingual? I hate taking my B12 because it tastes so bad. I know they have it in a form that you can swallow, but I didn't know if it would absorb right (just because I know we can't take certain pills like time released things). My doctor simply says to suck it up and do the sublingual, but I don't want to if I don't have to haha.

Thanks! :)

Intrinsic factor is necessary for the absorption of B-12, and it is produced in your stomach. Since most of our stomach is gone, there is less intrinsic factor produced, so, in turn, less B-12 absorption. Taken sublingually, it is absorbed....that's why we take it that way. At least that's what I kind of remember from nursing school, so I might be a little off. My surgeon only suggests supplementing once a week.

My surgeon makes all of his patients take at LEAST 1000 mcg a day.

Does your surgeon offer the injections? I went through a center that has a store and they also do B-12 injections.

My doctor gave me a prescription to take my B-12 thru shots. Once a month...that's it! It only cost me $12 at Sam's Club pharmacy (this includes the syringes).....$12 total is for 12 months/doses of shots!

there is a nasal b-12 called Ener-B you can get it at GNC it is a little gel drop that goes in your nose and is absorbed that way. I prefer the sublingual, it's also cheaper... (the sublingual is cheaper)..You couldn''t swallow enough B-12 pills todo any good for you....

What about the liquid form of B-12 (not pills, it's literally a liquid).

From what I understand it just isn't absorbed well by the stomache. Especially now since ours is so small.

Is there any documentation or research to back that up? About the pills not doing any good?

http://journals.lww.com/co-clinicalnutrition/Abstract/2006/07000/Nutritional_consequences_of_bariatric_surgery.24.aspx

Numerous citations, Google Scholar finds a dozen articles that all indicate the same things -- sublingual or nasal B12 is superior to ingested supplements.

Thank you so much or that! I think I'm struggling to find the balance and this just very well may be why!

Thank you again! :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
