Eating At A Bbq With People Who Don't Know

Recommended Posts

I'm about 5 weeks out and eating solids. Not very many people know, and I'm finding it harder and harder to figure out social situations where food is involved. We're going to a BBQ tomorrow and I think it'll be tri tip. I can probably eat that, but I'll be full in 2 bites. I had half of a sausage link this morning and was stuffed. Solid, dense Protein isnt easy right now. Soup's a good idea, but it's going to be hot so that would be weird to bring...

Any ideas for something I can bring that I can have more than a couple bites of?

I'm just preparing to say something about dieting, low carb, etc but people are going to start thinking I'm anorexic! Lol I can't even have salad. I'm realizing that the social stuff is the hardest part of this whole thing. Hopefully it gets easier...

I find people are less interested in what I am eating anymore interested in what they are eating. Put food on your plate and move it around, you don't have to eat it! The world according to egg face has some great ideas for things to bring to social situations. Have a look there for ideas.

Yep, I agree with Louise :) as long as you put something on your plate then move it around you should be fine, actually take a doggy bag fill up your plate and start emptying it surreptitiously into the bag for later! You can feed yourself for a week for FREE!!!! Jk! It's none of their business what your eating :)

You'd be surprised how little people pay attention to what others are eating. I had a friend who was on a medically supervised liquid diet. She could eat NO solid food. She didn't want people to know. She went to a BBQ with family members and she just put stuff on her plate and moved it around. Not one single person noticed. She did finally tell her in-laws later and they said they had honestly not noticed that she never actually ate anything. I say just eat what you know you should and in the amounts you are able and enjoy the party! :)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
