Was scheduled to get the sleeve yesterday but they found a lump on my stomach so they removed it.... Now I can't do the sleeve but they say they can do the bypass... Any thoughts??? I'm so nervous

Did they biopsy the lump? Do you know what it is? I don't understand why this would totally eliminate the sleeve as an option. I would think a second opinion would be in your best interest.

Did they biopsy the lump? Do you know what it is? I don't understand why this would totally eliminate the sleeve as an option. I would think a second opinion would be in your best interest.

It would depend entirely on where the lump was. If it was on the part of the stomach that would've been used to create the sleeve, the wall of the stomach (in that area) may no longer be strong enough to be integral to a sleeve. (A thin spot in the wall would (I would think) be more likely to rupture, or leak, post-op.)

If I were in your position, and determined to do whatever it took to get my weight off, I would go with the bypass procedure. When I went through the process of evaluating procedures, I was actually going to have a gastric bypass. After long discussion with my surgeon, however, he convinced me to go with the sleeve. The tipping point in my decision process was the decreased risk of malabsorption issues (commonly seen in bypass patients). In reality, though, if you take ALL the supplements prescribed by your doctor, and following the guidelines for diet after the bypass procedure, you should be fine in that regard.

I hope it was biopsied, and that it all turns out to be negative. Keep us posted on your decision!!

this is totally scarey! If as a last resort you can't have the sleeve, it would be an option to have the sleeve. I do have a friend that had the GBP and she did have dumping in the beginning, but later, she eats what ever she wants with no absorption issues. She did gain about 40 lbs of her weight back because she chose to eat the wrong foods. It is a viable option and it's better than the lap band. So my vote would be to go for it. :)

I will be having the bypass tomorrow :) kinda nervous but glad the lump wasn't cancerous the reason I can't do the sleeve is it was located on the part of the stomach needed for the sleeve and my dr said he didn't feel comfortable at all continuing bc of the possible outcomes so that's why we chose the bypass :) I'm glad he found the growth when he did so maybe this is the way it was meant to be for me :)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
