My BMI is 39-40 Im 5'2" I weigh 213-217

Im scheduled to have surgery in a couple of months. My question to all of you pre sleevers is this.....is this too low a BMI to do this? I wear 18-20 pants and a 2xl top. High bp, achy knees, achy ankles, and to go up a set of stairs leaves me breathing quite heavy. I just want some input. I desperately want the surgery.

Hi! I am also 5'2 and I weigh 221. My BMI is 40 and am in the beginning phase of this surgery process...but this is a very common BMI that I have seen on this site and this is what my insurance requires with no comorbidities. This is NOT healthy (I am speeking for myself) and I want to be a much better role model for my 5 yr old daughter. I know I am making the right decision!!! Good luck!!!

No, a low BMI doesn't mean you shouldn't do this. I went in have a BMI on the lower end of the spectrum after losing 50lbs on my own and when it came time to: do my post op diet, fly to Mexico, get in and out of the hospital bed, shower with a drain in, walk the gas off and recover, I was THRILLED to be a lower BMI. I think for me, my recovery was easier because I was smaller. If you want this -- do it!

You will not have any problems qualifying due to having a comorbidity of HBP. Do you have diabetes? that would definately help. :)

Sadly it's an exclusion on our insurance. I went to a seminar here in Mo. and that was the Dr. I wanted. The forms were filled out, turned in and denied by phone. Im scheduled for Nov 13 with Dr Ponce in Mexico as self pay. Im so excited I even have a count down on my phone so I can see it daily. I wish I wasn't going to have to wait so long but Im saving and will be ready on that date. Im 46 and my body screams much older and my mind thinks much younger Now to get the two to come together and enjoy life!

Thank you O.T.R.sleever I appreciate the kind words. Im really feeling good about Dr. Ponce and his team. I wish it were sooner but im looking at it as gaining much more knowledge about the after surgery. This site is just amazing! I thank you all!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
