Hi all,

I am type 2 and my surgery is on hold due to my A1C. Half way thru the prerequisite portion of my journey in March, my A1C was 7.6. :) When I went for pre-op testing in June it was 10. :( They won't do the surgery until I am back to 8. I wish someone would have told me to keep my eye on it. I was irresponsible and stopped testing because I thought, "hey I'm getting this surgery in a few months anyway". I say all that to say, don't stop managing your diabetes as you normally would or you may find yourself in the same boat. On a positive note, I do believe when I have my next test in Sept, I will be good to go. My daily test are looking pretty good.

Thanks for listening. :D

your a1c need to be < 8 for surgery , it takes about 3 months to change your a1c once you start your diet , so if your sugar is 200 and you need it to be 150 it will take 3 mo to get your a1c to equal 150 blood sugar

I was on what I called the "dead man walking diet" ( you know the every meal is my last meal syndrome) before my pre-op diet. My A1C was 10.7! My surgeon was not happy and thought I would have all kinds of complications. My actual sugars were less than 100 after a 2.5 week liquid diet so they went ahead with the surgery (whew!).

I proved him wrong though -- absolutely NO COMPLICATIONS! No pain, no nausea, no vomiting, no problems with wounds healing. It's been 3 months, I am down 52 lbs. My latest A1C was 7. 5's here I come!

My a1c during my medical clearance was 9.2--I totally thought the dr was not gona do the surgery for me...

He put me on a strict 3 Protein shakes a day diet and my sugars were IN THE 250'S TO 300'S when I get hungry my sugars skyrocket!!

I had a great surgery and no complications no nausea no vomiting and my incisions healed well...

my sugars are now in the 100's and Im on metformin 500 mg 2 x a day instead of 2000 mg of metfromin, insulin NPH 15 units a day and glipizide 5mg 2x a day

Im wearing 2x shirts and size 20 pants...Im doing well...thank god!

I was first diagnosed with gestational diabetes when I was pregnant with my first son 30 years ago & eventually diagnosed as Type II diabetes in 1992. I started on insulin back then because we were trying to become pregnant again (never happened). I think Metformin was added in 1999 & I have been on increasing amounts of insulin for several years & could barely keep my Hgb A1c around 7. Last October it was 7.5 & in May of this year it was 7.3. I started the high protein/low carb pre-op diet the day I saw my surgeon for the first time on April 25. I lost about 45 pounds before surgery & was able to decrease my insulin dramatically. I stopped the Metformin 10 days before surgery & took even less insulin on the two-week clear liquid diet before surgery.

I had my sleeve two days ago & my blood sugars were up a lot while in the hospital, in the 250-290 range. But they did do a Hgb A1c post-op and it was down to 5.9!!!! Now that I'm home & able to take my NPH insulin three times a day, my sugars are back to the lower 100s. I fully expected to be one whose diabetes improved after surgery but I now think that even I, after 20+ years of diabetes, might go into remission.

I am 3 months post op and am now off the insulin pump but taking 15 units of Lantus two times a day. Hoping to get off insulin entirely if all goes well. My blood glucose has been in the 80's and 100's so I am sure that my A1C will be very good. We will see at my next doctors visit.

Before surgery my A1C was a consistant 7, after the surgery my A1C is at 5.9, and my doc thinks it will go even lower as I lose more weight. No longer have to take BP meds, now just waiting to get rid of the Janumet. 4's here I come!

My last A1C was 6.2. No more diabetes meds for me! In fact, yesterday I waited too long to eat and had a LOW blood sugar problem. Whoopie! Do you know how long it's been since I had low blood sugar? I always carry a Protein Bar in my purse so I was okay, but just so unusual for me.

My surgeon goes with the theory that the surgery will change my A1C so he's not worried about my numbers before surgery. They are too high for my liking and so I'm trying low carb as much as possible. My surgery is on Nov 20

That it false that it takes 3 months to change your A1c. On May 15th my A1C was 10.5 on June 30th 7.7. All I did was cut out most carbs and took my medicine as prescribed. I am still pre op and had to get mine down. Hoping I get sleeved on Aug 5th just waiting approval.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
