I am reading this document that my doctor requires me to read and sign before surgery and it lists the risks that are involved with the surgery and side effects afterwards. It mentioned something about dumping syndrome...I didnt think people had that with this surgery? I thought it was only with the RNY? Can someone elaborate on that for me please? Does it really happen to sleeve patients?

I noticed that too, my understanding with bypass patients the dumping had to do with insulin http://voices.yahoo.com/dumping-syndrome-cause-low-blood-sugar-gastric-10901035.html I don't see how you can have true dumping syndrome with the sleeve.

Some gastric sleevers do have bouts of dumping syndrome from what I've read. My dr's a sleeve patient and he has had it once or twice. I've never had an experience like that though! He just told me "you didn't quite eat enough of (whatever) then". IDK if it's the same thing as RNYers experience or not in honesty. Sounds like it would be different in an RNYer due to the plumbing changes (like plumbing changes increase your risk to have dumping). But some sleevers have said they've had it.

Doesnt sound fun :( The dumping syndrome they discribed in my support group here where I live they said that people end up in the hospital its so bad. I hope I never have to experience that! So are people typically more constipated after this surgery rather than having diarrhea?

My doc says that you aren't so much constipated as that you don't have any food with which to make stool. As to the dumping syndrome he assures me that sleevers shouldn't experience that as long as you stay away from high sugar items. It's more or less described as a hypoglycemic attack; which i have already. Hopefully if I continue to avoid sugar I'll be ok. You'll surely see a post if it's otherwise. LOL

i was just about to post about dumping lol. so whats the difference between dumping and just having a regular bm?? i see some people say they take Miralax or metamucil for the Constipation but my question is, will i have the side effects from dumping if i happen to take a stool softner or something like that?

My heart began racing...i broke out into a cold sweat. Then came the diarrhea and vomiting at the same time. Once that subsided and i attempted to stand up i almost passed out. I am the mother of 6 children and the 2 dumping episodes i experienced were the most physically terrifying experience ive ever gone thru. I was convinced at those moments that if my husband had not thought to check on me i wouldve died on the bathroom floor. Looking back i know thats not true but the sheer terror of it cannot be forgotten.

You will not confuse it with anything youve ever experienced

and candy that is just why I had sleeve and not RNY.

Dumping, from how I remember my dr. explaining it, is whenever you ingest too much sugar. It sends a signal to your body - alert, need Water. So your body sucks Water out of every possible place to go to the sugar site which equals your having tremors, cold sweats, your bowels start acting up and you want to curl up in the fetal position and pray to God that you aren't dying.

I have yet (thank the dear Lord above) to experience this. My dr. says it's just because I haven't eaten too much of whatever. So most I can say is, to not experience it, know your limits. I am a HUGE sweet eater (or was prior to surgery). I rarely eat sweets now, well mostly. I have had half a piece of cheesecake, a piece of bday cake (small), chocolate, candies, but thankfully I haven't had Candy's experience.

And so sorry you did have it Candy! :(

I have however eaten too much fat (i.e. olive oil) and it makes me sick every single time. Only where I worship the porcelain goddess for a few moments, but that's enough for me.

Then there is Constipation, to which I say yes buy your Miralax and track your BMs to make sure you are keeping things moving..... but that's totally different than dumping.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
