I had my sleep study Friday night. It was miserable! Not all the wires- the bed! I woke up about 4 hours in and my back was killing me. I don't think I slept more that another hour. Hope that was enough. I get the results in 5-8 days. If I have to go back for a cpap machine, I think I will scream. Do you think I could go to another sleep center if I have to go back? Fingers crossed.

If you have to go back, consider taking a sleeping pill of some sort. This advice was given to me after I could not complete my sleep study. I left the center at 2 in the morning. I felt like such a failure. But I was so uncomfortable and miserable. I could not sleep at all. Luckily, the sleep study was not required for my surgery so I did not go back to try again.

Ditto what Tracey said. I ended up leaving my first study at 1:30 in morning bc I hadn't gotten 1 bit of sleep, was itchy and leg leads kept popping off (Hello! I told the guy I moved my legs to get to sleep yet he gave me no slack.). As I was leaving, they told me that I could've taken a sleeping pill. On my re-do study, I took an Ambien, brought my own bedding in case I'd been allergic to the detergent in their sheets and took an antihistamine. Plus, I insisted that they give me plenty of room for me to move my arms and legs. Much better and I slept for 5 hrs. Same thing when I had to go back for CPAP.

I also had a most uncomfortable sleep study. The bed was hard as a rock! My leads also kept coming off my leg and I swear I did not sleep one bit. But the pulmonologist "interpreted" the study and said I had "mild sleep apnea", he said i do not require CPAP yet, but he was glad i was getting WLS as it should help a lot. That was reassuring!

My insurance does not require pulmonology clearance, but my surgeon does, so I'm glad my doc felt my case was mild enough to to give his blessing!

I too agree with the sleeping pill, if needed. Had part 1 of mine last Sat and will go in for part 2 tomorrow night to be fitted for bi-pap and mask. Had a lot of difficulty Sat night and a sleeping pill saved me. My lower back was killing me as well. One thing that helped me was moving to center of the bed. (I have trouble sleeping on worn down droopy mattresses...) Results from night 1 showed that during the 236 min I was asleep I stopped breathing 127 times. Don't lose hope. Even with a small amt of time they can get good results. And its so dangerous, sleep apnea, make sure you give the testing a chance. I know I am glad I did. Good luck to all!!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will definitely be going the sleeping pill route if I have to go back.

I was able to do my sleep study at home. They gave me a little machine, slightly bigger than a cell phone, that straps around your chest. It has one finger clippy thing (for measuring heart rate - forget what it's called at the moment), and a breathing tube thingy that wraps around your head and tucks into your nose (the thing they give you oxygen through in a hospital). Easy peasy. The worst thing about it was that I had to wear pajamas to bed that night LOL!

I'm sorry, I can't remember what the unit was called. If you need to do it again, ask if they have the take home unit.

I'm sorry your lab has crappy beds! One of the ones I used to work at has Tempurpedic beds and my current lab has sleep Number. I'd also suggest the sleeping pill, but depending on the size of your town there may be another lab. You just need to make sure they take your insurance. Home studies are becoming more common, but a lot of labs are still not taking the bait yet. Plus, you can't do a CPAP titration at home. Well, you can, but I wouldn't recommend going that way..

Unfortunately with movement, leads (especially leg) can come off. In order to get a solid study and even possibly diagnose periodic leg movements, all the wires need to stay connected.

Also, don't be afraid to bring a fan or noise machine if you usually sleep with one. Feel free to bring your own pillow and blanket if that will put you at ease. We try to accomodate. I just ask that you wear clothes. LOL I've seen TOO MUCH!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
