I am 6 days out and have experimented with some soft foods. My Dr wanted me 2 weeks liquid. Items I've tried: avocado, won ton Soup, smooshed banana. All advise or input welcome. I get full quickly and immediately get gas and/or have burping other than that I feel fine. Comments?

I am right there with you. I was sleeved 9 days ago, and have 5 days til I see the Doctor to move forward with mushies. Today was the first day I felt I was hungry. I have had two proteinshakes with 30 grams of Protein and 32 oz of sobe 0 calorie Water and a yogurt with 8 grams of protein and 1 cup of liquid Soup 5 grams of protein and I am hungry more mentally than physically I think. Ohhh just to get through the next few days. I do not want to push to fast.

Can I ask why exactly you would go against your doctor's orders intentionally? I get that liquid diet is no fun, but I don't see why anyone would pay possibly thousands of dollars to have their stomach cut out and then not follow the doctor's orders. 2 weeks of a liquid diet is honestly not that hard, and they make these guidelines because they are trying to protect your health and think this is the best way to move through this process. They have years of medical school, residency, fellowship, not to mention experience to base their instructions off of.

If you are not enjoying liquids, try switching flavor of Protein powders. Add jellos. pudding. Tea. Homemade Soup broth. Greek Yogurt. There are tons of things you could try..

Just saying...seems kinda silly to me. If you can't stick to a 2 week liquid diet, how are you going to have the willpower to resist more difficult foods later on? Exercise some restraint or at least consider consulting your doctor before just deciding to go off plan.

I'm not trying to be mean....but I read this and just went "....really?"

The last paragraph of this needs to be posted on this site a thousand times over! SO TRUE!

Loved your entire post!

I know that the liquid diet is VERY hard. I am 16 days part op and have been on mushies for 2 days now.

It felt like I would never get to the 2 week mark but try really hard to sick with it. I'm not sure what specific liquids your allowed to have but I can tell you what helped me. I would mix up milk, a little ice, Protein mix (any flavor you like), & sf, ff pudding mix (flavor of your choice) with a little splenda. This have me a thicker liquid that was still on my dr list.

Just hang in there...what seems like an eternity now will be a distant memory before you know it. It is amazing how your brain plays tricks on you but you are strong and WILL make it through!!

It is REALLY getting frustrating how judgmental people have been on this forum lately. So much so that posts such as izuri's make me refrain from posting, our visiting nearly as often. A simple "you should be careful to follow your doctors recommended diet" with your recomemded tips would suffice.

Seriously, get off your high horses people...

Also, forgot that the broth off of egg drop Soup helped a lot. I would just drain off the liquid from the egg and sip. I found it very soothing to my stomach and a better taste then Water and Protein shakes!

Hopefully you will find something that works to get you through 1 more week.

Best wishes!!

I have the same problem. I want to eat something with a spoon rather than drinking from a 2 ounce cup. Everyone's diet seems to be different. Some people can have yogurt, sf pudding or Jello. I'm not supposed to have any of these in my liquid phase. But, the dietitian said that I can have thicker Soups as long as they fit through the mesh strainer. I just put some of them in the blender before straining and that seems to help. Then, I can at least "eat" something, rather than "drink" it.

The OP said "all advise or input welcome". It's not judgmental to ask "why are you going against your Doctor's orders?". A lot of people come here to read and learn about VSG who never or rarely post. If there were never any dissenting opinions posted here people would read these posts about going rogue and think it was a perfectly accepted practice. All I know is when I read all the success stories, the over whelming majority just followed the plan.

Why are people so afraid of a little criticism from perfect Internet strangers? If I'm making a mistake, I expect to be told. If I'm not, then I don't mind defending my position.

I'm kinda in the same boat with you now. I had my sleeve done last Friday (6) days ago. I've been handling mashed potatoes, popsicles ans hello pretty well. I talk to dieticians yesterday and tried a can of tuna, I took it good. Seen the Dr today and he said I that really soft fish is ok in the soft food diet. So for lunch I had a little bit of tilapia and crab cake and save the rest. I am handling that stuff better than Protein Shakes. I also been going to the smoothie king and getting healthly ones, adding Protein Shots and taking throughout the day. It almost costs the same. If you like similar things maybe you can check with your Dr office, each one is different on what they want you doing. Also, everyone is different. I had my surgery at 0930, was up and walking in a few hours and out of the hospital that same evenining and back to work Wednesday. Heck I was at Ikea Sunday shopping and trying the mashed potatoes.

Yeah sorry, but I agree with izuri. The doctor sets the limits for a reason. They have the degrees, expirence, and school loans to show they do know what they are telling people. I don't think that was judgmental at all. Now if the post was along the lines of name calling and belittling, yeah I could see a time out needed....

But I mean we are all grown ups here. (Well I think so) :-) If people come here asking what they are doing wrong or looking for advice or any input, then I don't think they are worried about positive criticism.

Whoa Ladies...first of all I'm not an idiot and I have researched this procedure, it's limitations, complications and diet for almost 4 yrs. this was no easy decision. And I DON'T take it lightly.

There are MANY approaches to postop intake and I have carefully considered them all. Am I a Dr? No, but I do work in the healthcare field and know a thing or two. I don't mind advise or a completely opposing opinion but some of the posts feel just mean spirited. "Why would I waste thousands of dollars?" Is that necessary?

Anyway I have never been a "sheep" when it comes to my own health and body. An educated decision is just that. So chill already. And for the record my insurance paid every cent :P

Exactly, there's a difference between constructive criticism and being self righteous. Thanks

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
