What Should I Expect When The Band Is Removed?

Recommended Posts

I have had my band for 5 years tomorrow. It has been a love hate relationship (mostly hate). I was curious as to what I might expect in the way of recovery. Will it be easier, same or harder getting the band out then in?

Thanks,

Teresa

Hi Teresa!

I just had my band removed and the sleeve done Monday and I can say I was expecting a rough recovery but so far it hasn't been. When I had my band surgery I felt like there was a sumo wrestler sitting on my chest for a few days no matter how much I walked or took gas x. That hasn't been the case with this. The worst part of this so far has been the 24hrs after when you can't drink ANYTHING (Damp wash cloth to wipe your mouth out will be your best friend) and I have a pain on my left side that the nurse is telling me is common as that is the side where they do the most work.

Hope this helps and good luck to you.

Hi,

My Revision is scheduled for September 10. My biggest concern is that the doctor will get in there and decide that he can't do the sleeve after the band removal. I wonder what the instances are that the sleeve has to be postponed due to scar tissue, etc. That is my biggest scare.

RELIEF! I had mine for 7 years until it was removed in June....I dont miss cramping in my port area if I bend over too long or acid reflux i developed in year 6...

To me, my pain was worst when I had the band put in compared to revision surgery....but it could've been I was so happy to get the band out I wasn't phased by the pain....

Very easy recovery after a removal. Sl. Soreness but you will feel better- no food getting stuck, no sliming, but you can grieve, too. Cry until you can't any more and then begin your future journey.

My band removal was done as an outpatient day surgery. The port area was sore, and I got a virus shortly after surgery so didn't feel so great, but all in all not too bad.

The big surprise was a couple of days after it was gone, I was uncontrollably hungry.

I just had mine out this morning. It was a cakewalk compared to having it put in. Minimal soreness, not even enough to need pain meds.

I will then revise in about four months.

Good Luck!

Had mine taken out in Dec. had been so sick 2 weeks before could not eat or drink anything so it was probably a relief to get it out but I don't even remember pain. Getting my sleeve on Monday and so excited.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
