Barium Swallow / Endoscopy

Recommended Posts

Hi to all Revision people!

Just wondering how many of you had to do a barium swallow and endoscopy before/during their VSG revision?

Thanks,

Dottie

I had to do the upper GI, this will be quite important to help you figure out if you have a hernia, this way they are prepared in advance. I get endoscopes every 2-3 years so I didn't need one because I still had the previous ones on record.

These are normal for a lot of people. During surgery they use a bougie to help guide him and it's always best to know what you are getting into in advance. If you have never had these, neither are bad.

The endoscope they use twilight, knock you out and do the scope and you may have a tiny minor sore throat for a day. The worst part of the endoscope if the prep the day before if you need one. I usually get colonoscopies and endoscopes done same day so not sure if it's the same if you are just having one done.

The upper GI, they take xrays, you then swallow some chalky stuff (which isn't all that bad) and they take more xrays.

Best of luck.

Endoscopy needed, but no barium swallow. I don't remember it, but I don't think I needed to do much prep (not like colonoscopy)

Endoscopy, no. Barium swallow, yes.

I have to endoscopy. Everyone should. It's the only way to know how much scar tissue is there or other damage before they cut you.

I have to have an endoscopy every 5-6 years due to other medical issues in my upper esophagus unrelated to sleeve/band. I REFUSE to do the barium because it is unecessary- My doctor and GI know what they are doing and I have NEVER had a problem either pre or post sleeve with any of the endoscopies Ive had..

I had one fill after my band surgery. 2.85cc. Sliming and Pbing was almost a daily experience. About 8 months after band surgery, it got too tight... I was having trouble liquids. Had to exist on thin Soups and such for two months before I could fly back to the States for an unfill. The band has never really worked for me. I had a complete unfill last September... and now only 2 weeks until I get this band out! My doctor is saying that I will need to do a barium swallow the morning of the surgery and possibly a endoscopy. I will do whatever he recommends...just wondering about every bodies experience. Thanks for the feedback.

Cheers, Dottie

Hey scubadottie -

I am in the process of being approved for the band revision, and I have to take an UGI on Tuesday. I don't have to have an endoscopy that I know of. I had one before being banded, and it wasn't bad at all - I rather enjoyed being loopy all afternoon! :-)

I'm totally jealous that you have a surgery date, by the way. I'm hoping to get a date sometime in early October.

Thanks and Good Luck!

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
