How Much Food For First Weeks

Recommended Posts

I haven't received my doctors official pre/post-op list yet but my understanding is I will be on Clear liquids for a week and then liquids for another week before moving on to puree baby food for several weeks? (I'm assuming they mean the consistency not the actual food).

I don't want to go overboard in buying food to prepare.

1. How much did you actually consume at this time? If I'm understanding some posts I'll be lucky to get a can of broth or strained chicken Soup a day. How much is realistic for first 2 weeks?

2. when doing pureed food did you actually buy a processor or just do soft foods?

3. Is sodium a big concern post-op? some said to drink broth from oodles-of-noodle packs. However, I believe they are extremely high in sodium. Inexpensive.

That broth is extremely high in sodium. I had done the same thing and bought Ramen noodles and drank the broth, but so high in sodium. I had also bought these little packs called Swanson's Flavor Boost - they are individual packs of a concentrated chicken broth that I could add to a mug of hot Water. Slightly less in sodium.

If you can get in Isopure, that's great because you get some Protein, but don't buy a lot, I can't even look at it now and I have a lot left.

Dr. Kelly will have you on Clear Liquids until day 10. I did have some broths, but what I really drank was Gatorade. It is still the only liquid I really like. Although I did make myself transfer to the G2 now that it is not my entire diet. Water, clear broths, caffeine-free coffees and teas, apple juice, cranberry juice, grape juice, orange juice (no pulp), crystal light, sugar free Gelatin, sugar free popsicles

From day 10 until 3 weeks out, you will be on "full liquids". This is Protein shakes, milk products, cream type Soups. Jello, pudding, hot cereals made thin and soupy, vegetable juice (like V8), Carnation Instant Breakfast

Good luck!

You still won't be able to eat that much. Small, small portions. I kept my diet pretty much high Protein for the first few months and it helped lose the majority of my weight. I also would drink the low calorie G2 Gatorade diluted with Water and found out that it made me really gassy. So now I don't drink it. Now I'm doing much better. :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
