Hi, I am new here. I started the process for VSG approval in September of 2011 and I have a date for this Monday July 2, 2012

I just got off the phone with the OR to let them know I will not be there, I am running so scared!

I have not experienced this fear I was really confident and now the past two days I have just been so nervous and scared and I just think you should feel more confident about it? Am I worng? Is this the worst thing I could have done??

any insight?

Thanks

Whenin real doubt wait it out. Your mind will need to be prepared for the challenge this appears to be. Even then It will stll be gard at first. Good Luck with your decision.

I think if you have any doubts it is good to not have it at the moment. It would be good if you could speak with your Dr. I don't regret it myself. I never felt scared. But you need to be sure. It is life changing, in many ways, not just how you eat, how you live day to day, It will give you many parts of your life back, but it will take some away also - you need to be prepared for that.

Hey there..

Don't be hard on yourself. This is not about what color shirt to go with those shoes, ore should I go with black nail polish, even though my fingers are stubby..

THIS IS YOUR LIFE! And its definitely not to be taken lightly.

Maybe you should try to think about why you want to have the surgery in the first place. Maybe the reasons have changed??

You have to be completely and totally okay with everything, but also understand that everyone that goes through this process probably has the same feelings one time or another.

Just breath, take a minute and trust yourself to make the right decision in the end.

Hope this helped a little!!

I am having my surgery on the 17th and I get this fear and start crying sometimes. I have a 23 months old baby and it scares to death that if something happens to me he will not have his mom. However, I am doing this for him. I want to live a long life so I can enjoy him. I have a great doctor, so I know in good hands. I think its 'normal' to feel scared....so think about the reason why you are doing this and leave it on God's hands.

Can you elaborate on what you're experiencing, feeling? It seems like you've been dedicated for a long time, almost 9 months. Have you had doubts all along?

If you're not ready, you're not ready. Honor that. But I'd really spend some time with those feelings, write them out, talk to someone, before making any decisions. Make sure if you're dealing with nervousness or actual doubts. Did they confirm that you are off the schedule?

I had major swings back and forth in the week before, and of course the few days before. Just manic thoughts in my brain non-stop. But that happens to everyone, and it's that commitment to knowing this is the next best step for me that kept me on track. Maybe you're feeling otherwise?

I just left the hospital and was soooo freaking out the day before and the day of. Crying and nervous, sitting in front of the window writing down questions to ask the doc like, what happens in case of a needed transfusion, what is the complication rate, on and on!!! I think your mind plays tricks on you and all of the research and preparedness you have done seems to go out the window!!! I totally get it! As a matter of fact when I was rolled into the preop area I asked the nurse if it was too late to back out LOL She said "here here, this is some meds to help you relax" and off I went to la la land!! So I'm on the losers bench!! I have had no complications, a little bit of nausea and a little bit of gas pain but so far great!! I'm so glad I didn't back out but let me tell you it was a close one! I'm sure you will know when the time is right but don't think it doesn't happen to almost all of us! You will be fine =) I, and I know others on this forum ,will be praying for you to you to have a safe and fabulous journey!!! Get back on the saddle girl!!

I had my surgery on 6/18 and I was so scared right up to when they wheeled me into surgery, I was so scared that I would die! I think that is normal for anyone to have a fear of not waking up from surgery, but once I woke up it was on, I jumped in 100% and have done everything my dr. has told me to, and I'm down 36 lbs ( including 20 lbs post-op). I am so excited about my new life. There is not any food that I am gonna miss so much that I regret having this surgery!

I was sleeved on June 26. Today, I have some pain in my right side, but I know it will eventually go away. I had so much faith in my doctor that I did not worry about not waking up. I was however worried about him not being able to get to my stomach to perform the surgery because of scar tissue from previous unrelated surgery. We know VSG is a relatively safe procedure from our research, and as long as you trust your surgeon, don't worry. It will turn out fine.

The possibility of dying during this surgery is miniscule compared to the possibility of dying from being obese. For every 1,000 patients, three, or .003, die during or within a month of their surgery, whereas 16.6 of ALL deaths are the result of poor diet and physical inactivity. When considering the surgery please remember you are doing it to be alive and healthy. It is, however, a decision you need to make for yourself and need to take seriously. I had some trepidations a week before the surgery but I have never once in the two and a half months since my surgery been sorry I did it.

Honestly, I don't understand the fear.

Granted, I have already had the band, and am scheduled for revision on August 8th. Also, I had 2 cancer surgeries in 2004, and my gallbladder out about 4 months ago.

However, the greater fear for me is NOT having the surgery and being miserable and obese for the rest of my life.

Which scares you more?

Death is a possibility whenever you step outside, but we face it everyday, don't we?

I have always thought you should follow your instincts cuz they are there for a reason. No need to rush into things, but...do you know why you are scared? Time to figure that one out. Is it fear of surgery? Fear of complications? Fear of lifestyle change? Or just not ready? Important to figure that out and then move ahead...maybe this is not the right path for you! Or maybe u just need a little more time. Take your time, do your research and then follow the path that feels right. This is your 'informed consent' for life...u go, girl!

Cancelling on the operating room at the last minute is a big deal for the hospital and for your doctor. You waited until it was too late for them to schedule someone else.Take time to decide. If you want to go through with it, I hope your doctor will reschedule. Best of luck to you. I hope you figure it all out.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate your insights,

I have two children with autism, and my husband was recently diasnosed with terminal form of early dementia, so they are the resons I decided to have the surgery and now it is like they are the reasons I feel like I should not get it, God forbid I become one of the low percentages of people with complications, I am just so worried about everything no it is rushing through my mind like a movie in fast forward. I certainly know the reality that cancelling last minute is a big deal and maybe if I decide I want it my doctor will tell me to take a hike, IDK, I just don;t think that is a reason I should not cancel if I have doubts?

I am 40 years old, 5'3" and I weight 255 pounds.

Right now I am fairly healthy despite being obese but that is not the reason I decided to cancel

I am just soo scared I will be hurt in surgery, have a bad reaction to something, get really sick, the life style changes are not my worry, I am all my family has, if I am somehow injured from this, where will we all be?

I am just all the sudden saddled with the weight of the world..and I felt fairly good up until they called me with the time I was suppose to report to the hospital

Not sure I made the best or the worst decisionmof my life

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
