It's A Never Ending Journey!

At 5 months post-op you'd think that I'd have my eating down and that I wouldn't make mistakes, but you'd be wrong... We learn that Protein always comes first, and even though we know, sometimes we still make mistakes. Like this morning, when I forgot to grab my egg "muffin" (http://thesimpledelights.com/?p=246) from the fridge before I left the house. I got to work and felt like I was about to gnaw off my arm when I decided to break down and buy my Breakfast.

First stop, the refrigerated vending machine. Sometimes they have an egg and cheese biscuit or something in there, and I just take off the bread and eat the Protein. This morning, no such luck. Next stop, the school store. They usually have beef Jerky - not ideal but in a pinch it'll do. Today however they're out. The store did have a blueberry muffin so I thought "Well, it's that or a bag of popcorn... Muffin it is." Wrong answer. I intended to only eat the top, but after about 1/3 of the top my body started protesting and into the garbage it went.

Carbs don't sit well with me, and I know this, but I ate it anyways because something was better than nothing, right? So for those of you who think that after 5, 6, or even 12 months you'll be a sleeve expert, or a pro at always knowing and doing the right thing, think again. I'd venture a guess to say that even the most tenured veterans that are 12, 18, or even 24mos out still make mistakes in their eating. It's not the mistake that counts, it's what you do AFTER the mistake that counts. So, for the rest of the day I'm on protein only, and this evening before bed, I'm going to make sure that my food for tomorrow is packed and ready so that if I don't have time in the morning, I don't have any excuses.

Mistakes happen, but as long as we learn from them and consistently try to do better the next time around, it's not the end of the world...

OMG! This is so true. I'm 8.5 months post op and I still make mistakes. I am just now learning that I need to order off the side orders in restaurants instead of the full blown meal that I can't eat. I have wasted so much money that way because I never go back and visit my left overs. My hubby gets them and it's really not doing him any favors. So, as of today, I will order off the side menu's and steal bites from my hubby's plate :). Also I really need to start preparing my meals. It would be so much easier in the long run. Also, I'm going to schedule my meals and not eat anything in between the meals. i confuse my thirst and hunger cue. So, I still have a lot of mental work and now is the time to do it. ;)

Great lesson!

Just our if curiosity- why was beef Jerky a bad choice?

I eat it at least a couple times a week.

Not a bad choice, just not ideal for me. I try to stay away from a lot of sodium and preservatives. I eat it in a pinch or when I just need something quick.

need to order off the side orders in restaurants ;)

went out to Red Loster saturday - i ordered an appetizer. It gave you a choice of 3 small items. i ordered the scallops and clams and mozzarala sticks with the successful plan to give the mozzarella sticks to DH.

btw 6 1/2 post op - this is the 1rst time i ate out - kindof afraid to -_-

I also asked for a little "doggy bag" to be given to me right away w/my meal, then when i got my food i immediately put 1/2 away in the bag so i wouldn't be tempted. to nibble, even though my tummy probably wouldn't like even a bit of extra food, - maybe i could sneak in an extra clam while my tummy wasn't looking

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
