What was your last straw?

Recommended Posts

I've seen topics like this in the past and it's always interesting to read the responses. I want to know, what was the last straw for you? What made you decide that enough was enough and it was time to look into surgery?

For me it was two things

1. Realizing that I'd gained so much weight my watch didn't fit anymore. I've worn a watch every day of my life since I was 8 years old.

2. Endlessly circling the parking lot, looking for a space close to the door because I knew that I'd never make it inside if I parked farther away.

Mine was pictures of my family reunion.

I had this tank dress that I thought I looked great in. And it looked fine in the mirror to ME. It was hot outside. I would normally where a shirt over the tank dress but because of the heat I elected to go to the photograph session in just the tank dress.

When I saw the picture of myself, the first thing I thought to myself was.... OMG you should have worn a shirt!!! I was completely embarrassed and hadn't realized the dress didn't look as good on me as I thought it did.

Honestly, If I had worn a shirt over the tank dress, I don't think I would have even gotten to the point I am at right now. I have seen myself many times at this weight fully dressed in pictures.

Not only did it not look good, it looked inappropriate. Kind of in the way if, I wondered onto the beach in a bikini bathing suit. That was my last straw and I made the appointment for the seminar the day I received a copy of the picture.

Mine is the fact that I can't see my family until I lose weight. My dad's side of the family is very superficial. Every time I talk to my grandmother, it's "How's WW going," or "Have you been using that treadmill?" My dad's current wife is very thin, probably 5'2, 115 lbs, if that. Even before my real fatness days, I saw her watching everything I would eat. Some people don't know how to have conversations about anything other than food/exercising, and that's my family.

I asked my dad one time to write me a prescription for something to help with the breaking out on my face, and he told me, "You know, when I was your age and was breaking out, I just hopped on the treadmill, does a lot of good."

Love the family, loves them.

My daughter turned 21, and started making noises about moving out, and my son started high school. As I contemplated what to do with the extra "me" time, I eventually came to the realization that I have been delaying getting a life outside of raising them since my husband died 13 years ago, and using my excess weight to do it. And I turned 50, and started thinking about whether I wanted to have more healthy years or risk getting diabetes, heart problems, etc. and dying earlier. That's when I finally made an appointment with the surgeon and started the process.

My final straw was the decline in my health. I have end-stage arthritis in my knee and need a total knee replacement. The orthopedic surgeon told me I would face a 6 month recovery at my pre-band weight versus a 6 week recovery at a weight less than 200 pounds. Also, the life of the joint replacement is lessened the more weight you carry.

My "reward" when I lose the weight is not a day at the spa or some fancy trip... it's an end to the daily pain I have once I can get that new knee. LOL.

Mine was two fold, 1: that I was taking five shots a day for my diabetes(living in the 250 to 350 blood sugar range) and was still gaining weight, 2: at work I was on an elevator and one of my fellow employees asked when I was going to have my baby, I am a male by the way, when I told her that wasn't very nice she just laughed. That had happened many times before and that time just put me over the edge, dieting had never really worked long term so Lap Band was the way to go and I am glad I did it.

Mine was when I was standing by a smorhasbord at a wedding stuffing my face with Pasta and meat so that I can quckly finish whats on my plate and refill it with spare ribs that were just brought out. As I was chewing, my dads life long friend came over to me and said, "Saul I was exactly like you at your age, I ate everything as fast as I could so that I could eat some more, I was heavy my whole life and thought it was all a joke, well let me show you something". He then took off his tie and opened up the buttons of his shirt, right there in the middle of someones wedding, he showed me a scar from his neck down to his crotch and told me, "See this scar, because of my weight I underwent a quadruple emergency bypas, the only reason for me coming close to death was that I was carrying around all that belly fat, just like you, if you like these scars keep doing what your doing and hopefully you wont die from a heart attack, if you want smaller scars and a lifetime of being thin then check out lap band surgery".

Boy am I glad he did that. I will never forget that image. Thanks Irwin.

My last straws were when I stopped fitting into chairs with arms, booths at restaurants, and movie theater seats comfortably, coupled with the inability to walk a block without being winded. Currently I'm a little over six months out and have lost 45 pounds. I'm cautiously optomistic...

I was not expecting "my last straw." I thought I was going to an orthopedic surgeon to get some relief from chronic ankle pain. He is the one who was brave enough to tell me that if I was going to weigh 290 or so, there wasn't anything he could possibly do that would actually help. As I sat there stunned, he referred me to a lap-band surgeon. Something in his straight-forward approach finally opened my eyes. At that time, my mom was in the hospital, still in the hospital after 5 months...and though I didn't know it then, was in the last week of her life. They say God works in mysterious ways...it all came together for me. I knew I had to do something to improve my health, that I was not doing it "on my own." I had my family's full support, and even though my mom passed away, I went ahead with the surgery two weeks later.

Sometimes, the last straw is a true blessing.

Omg..Everyone's stories are making me weepy, because I can so relate but more because everyone did something about it. My last straw was on vacation at Lake Chelan this year, we rented a ski boat and I was inner tubing when I fell off the tube and realized I couldn't pull myself back up on the boat, using the ladder. My surgery is on Thursday..Praise GOD!

Mine was in Hawaii in May. Two things really. One, we were on the third floor of the condo place, and climbing those 2 flights of stairs were so hard for me.

The second was trying to climb up a washed-up hill from a beach. It took DH and an uncle to literaly push and pull me up. I was mortified.

I was at my in-laws house chasing around after one of the little kids and realized that A. I couldn't catch this kid inside the house and B. I was so out of breath I thought I was going to have a heart attack.

I sat there at my house that night thinking if I can't catch this one kid inside a house, how will I ever keep up with my own kids when I have them. I determined that night that I wasn't going to miss out on having kids and playing and being alive anymore.

A bad GP who kept telling me I won't lose enough weight with the Lapband convinced me to stop listening to others and determine what I needed to do myself.

Thank god for Dr Geiss, his staff and the support of the dietician, therapist and all the normal people who show up for the third tuesday meeting every month.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
