Tell Me About Exercise Post Op

Recommended Posts

Going in on Wednesday to have surgery, haven't lost a lot on pre-op diet, but haven't exercised either. What, when, etc. should I plan after surgery to be successful?

I am 10 days post op and all I can do right now is walk but I also have a drain that is majorly uncomfortable and painful so I may not be the best suited to answer this for ya.

I left the hospital the day after surgery and went out for a walk around the block that evening. Slow, to be sure, but made it all the way and felt I could have done more. The next day, I went to the exercise room and began my treadmill routine. 20 minutes at 2 mph at first, then 30 at 2, etc, until I got up to 60 minutes at 2, then 30 minutes at 3, 40 minutes at 3 and again up till 60 minutes. After that, I increased speed every so often when I felt I was ready. Now, 10 weeks after surgery, I am up to 4 miles at 3.5 mph, which takes me about an hour and 9 minutes. I haven't had a stall yet and I'm down 59 lbs. Ya gotta exercise. It's kinda like banging your head up against the wall cause you feel so good when you stop.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
