I keep reading about folks sleeping a bunch after surgery but I am the exact opposite. Had surgery in Mexico June 18th and slept that night thanks to morphine but have only slept about 4 hours since that night & it's now Sat. I could just cry.....

I napped a lot that first week. Not normal sleep patterns. I do not have a medical background so can not speak to morphine possibly affecting your sleep.

My VSG surgery was outpatient so I was sleeping in my own bed that night without a drain, no morphine, no nurses waking me up and no staples. I only took pain meds once and that was to sleep.

Did you have poor sleep patterns prior to surgery? Are you napping often so you sleep patterns are off? Have you called your surgeon to see if they have anything or advice to help?

Good luck and congratulations on being sleeved.

Have a Tempur Pedic & before surgery I could easily sleep 8 - 10 hrs (I could easily be a spokesperson for the company) but now, nope can't sleep. Maybe it's all the meds they were pumping in my IV & I just need some time to get them out of my system. Am so tired yet wide awake. How crazy does that sound? lol

Some people react differently to pain meds than others. I'm one of them. If I take a whole dose of Loritab, I will be up for days, cleaning everything in sight. Woe betide the person who gets in my way!! At a half dose of Loritab, I'm ready for a nice little nap. Perhaps your anesthesia is making you unable to sleep. Call your doctor and see if there is something that can help you get some rest. It's essential to complete the healing process. :)

Good luck!!

It took me a week or almost two before my sleep habits became normal again. I had to sleep sometimes in my recliner sometimes in bed propped with a ridiculous number of pillows.

It should get better soon! Hang in there!!

I'm sorry you're not sleeping. That is so frustrating. That happened to me when I had my lap band surgery years ago and I was in tears because I was so tired but I was unable to sleep.

I was fortunately able to sleep with this surgery. I think things will improve for you very soon.

The same thing happened to me. I had surgery in Mexico on the 14th. I had trouble sleeping from the day after the surgery up until two nights ago. Last night was my first night sleeping through the night. I was so concerned I even asked around here. I think it has something to do with the medications and the changes our bodies went through. It will get better.

Thanks so much for the input!! I thought I was an oddball here (I might still be in another area but.... ha ha). It is frustrating when you are already second guessing your decision & you are tired & can't sleep. I've kept myself busy off & on all day today so maybe I wore myself out & will sleep some tonight.

Hi! I wasn't sleeping to well either but I assumed it was because I slept a lot the first few days. Each day I am sleeping longer though!

Hang in there! Each day does get better!

Thank you!! Sitting in recliner watching Dallas that I recorded Wed night. I love the new Dallas as much as the old Dallas. Hoping it will make me sleepy.

I'm having mine as out patient too. Any tips for sleeping after surgery? Or any other tips in general for us outpatient-ers?

So are you sleeping better yet? And is it a restful type of sleep? I'm worried about my sleeping patterns too. There is only so much good tv to record... Lol. I hope things are better for you!

I still haven't slept yet. My luck I'll start sleeping when I have to go back to work & can't sleep in. Good luck with your surgery. The day after my surgery I felt great but after they made us drink the blue dye Tuesday night, it went down hill. That is some nasty stuff!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
