I should know who that Dr. is Andree, but I'm not sure. I think he is the one at TLBC. You may get in quicker with Dr. Cobourn or Dr. Mumford. I think they all are great surgeons. I havent heard anything bad about any of them. You just may get in a little sooner, thats all.

Nope he isn't at TLBC.....the ones there are Drs. Joffe and Yau.

Actually... I think Dr. Leung is very good... from what I remember. He's 'old school' like Dr's Joffe and Yau, and been doing lapbands almost as long as they have. I think he'd be a good choice. BUT.... you would get in quicker in Ontario, if that's a factor for you.

I was banded by the good Dr. Leung 5 weeks ago.

If you have any questions, let me know.

He is pretty old school, requires a clear liquid fast for 30-35 days. He is a no nonsense kind of guy. Not the best bedside manner, but many of us respect his work and feel good about our choice.

Paula 5 weeks out and down 30 pounds.

Hi Paula! Great job so far!

So, that's 30-35 days after surgery, or before? Or both? Does he have a pre-op diet? What's it like?

Mind me asking how much her charges? Are fills (for life) free?

Thanks!

Mandi

More questions, Paula! Now that I look at your signature... what size band do you have? Cause I see "1.65cc", so I'm thinking that MUST be a 10cc band... BUT... that's a really small amount for that band, and quite a bit for a 4cc band!

Wai Leung requires 30 - 35 days post op of Clear liquids. No, he does not require a pre op diet.

I have to say that although I like Leung, he doesn't have good bedside manner, so some complain that he is not supportive. He is just very matter-of-fact.

If I remember correctly, he charges 13,500.00 and fills for me are free for life.

Yes, I have a 10CC band and I am complaining about the fill not being enough, so I am going to book an appointment for another.

BUT, let me ask you a question. Why are you considering coming clear across the country? I live a 4 hour drive from Vancouver and find it a nuisance to get there for fills.

Good luck with your decision.

Oh no... I'm not thinking of coming there for fills. I'm just wondering, cause I know of a lady who's *thinking* about it, and was just curious, so I could tell her, if she wanted to know!

I too am 4-1/2 weeks post-op from Dr Leung. And my experience is pretty much like Paula's. Cost-wise, I paid $13,000 less approx. $1,000 (for being a day surgery and not spending the night). I was just denied insurance refunds by Pacific Blue Cross. I'm estimating I'll get an additional $3,000 back when I file my income tax next year. As Paula noted, fills and all follow-up appointments are covered under our provincial medical coverage (MSP) so there should be absolutely no costs after surgery.

OOps. Now I see your signature. What size band do you have? I need another fill for sure, but you started at the same basic weight as me and I need to shake things up to take off the next 20 pounds.

Copngratulations to you! who hooo. Is your friend here in BC. There are two other choices in BC. Not a lot compared to Ontario.

HEY MARIE, how things going for you? did you get your fill yet? I need another....

All is well. Still holding at 266 - same for last few weeks. First fill on Thursday - really looking forward to it!

How is your restriction? When you coming down for fill #2?

Marie

Well, the jury is still out on how my restriction is. I only had 1.65 CCs put in and if I had known, I might have insisted on more. Now, I know what people are saying that some days there is more restriction than others. I am hoping that a member here was right when she said that the fill might tighten up a bit after 2 weeks.

I am going to give it one more week from today Marie, then if I am not properly restricted, I am booking another appointment. It is a PIA for me. I have 3 school aged kids and I will have to either make it a trip for the whole family, or make an appointment for Monday morning early, leave very early, have a fill, then drive home again. It is a 4 hour drive each way. I don't mind doing it, but as you can imagine, it is a nuisance.

Like you, I paid 12,500. for this gadget, I want it to work for me.

Let me know how your fill goes Marie. I want to know how many CC's he puts in you.

My weight is fluctuating that last 3 pounds I took off. So it will be interesting what the scale says on Friday.

So far, I have been eating pretty much low carb. But my usual low carb cheats are in the house and the nuts I am eating can't be helping my weight loss any.

I have very little to nothing for Breakfast, coffee with milk and a cube of cheese. and lots of Water. I love, but shouldn't have those tiny full fat yogurts Minigo...

For lunch today, I had one of those tiny cans of salmon salad. I love those, with 1/2 avacado and a bit of Salad Dressing and then I tossed a few nuts on top for crunch.

For suppers, I am having whatever meat I prepare, chicken or fish usually, with some soft veggies. I guess my downfall would be the yummy, full fat Ranch Dressing I dip the veggies in.

I feel very satisfied, but am eating too many Snacks of those yogurts, I eat 2 at a time, as they are so tiny, with a piece of cheese and like I confessed, too many nuts.

Hey Paulax....I find it a bit odd that you only had 1.65 cc's put in for a 10cc band as your first fill. I only say that because at TLBC, their standard first fill for 10cc bands (ie. the Midband) is 5 ccs (unless of course you state you already feel restriction...which is apparently the case only for a verrrry small %age). So, yeah, I recommend you ask for quite a bit more next time; especially if you aren't feeling anything. On Fri, I got 2 more ccs (for a total of 7) and now I'm FINALLY feeling this and am quite happy to be feeling what I am feeling (restriction wise).

Good luck!

Thanks for that.

Now, I may seem dumb saying this, but I actually am just guessing at the 10CC band.

MARIE, HELP ME OUT HERE. We were banded one week apart, same surgeon. The man of few words, never actually told me. Could it be that I have a 10cm band???

I am jealous of your restriction.

I'd love to hear a comparison of what you eat in a day with that restriction.

Thank you kindly in advance....

I appreciate the input.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
