Just got a approved for surgery today, so excited! I haven't really told anybody I was considering surgery to help me loose weight. So today I was in such a good mood, I decided to tell a family member I was considering the wls. Big mistake, the first words out of her mouth was, "don't do it, you don't want look like star jones do you" I laughed but I was really hurt and scared what people/family are going to think of me. I know I shouldn't worry about what others think because I'm doing this to save my life. I really wish I hadn't said anything.

I kept it quiet, my husband and two of my three kids know... the only reason my other child doesn't know is that he is in Korea right now and I didn't want to worry him being so far away.

Last fall I had mentioned to people at work that I was considering WLS and the reaction was so bad that I knew then and there if I went through with it I wasn't telling anyone. I don't know if people at work guessed but they all think I had gall bladder and hernia surgery.

Hell, the surgery saved Star Jones' life...you know that VSG isn't RNY, you've done your homework....if what people say will have a big effect on you, just talk about it to the people who are important to you....the rest can watch later... :) This is suppose to be a positive process, not a negative one....

I chose not to say anything to my family either. I am glad I did this, no regrets! It's no one's business but your own.

I think Star looks good! And, she is much healthier! Remember, we are doing this for "ourselves" and we don't need "their" approval! Find those that will support you and be a positive influence to help you with this journey! I'm still preop but my coordinator said today that it looks like I'm on track for a late July surgery. I'm just going to plan on August and if everything works out for earlier, then even better! Best of luck to you! :)

Gosh I hate when people say stupid things!

My sister kept on telling me I will end up looking older, and she said everyone she seen who has had WLS gets horrible "mouth lines" I just ignore her.

WHAT!!?!????!!!!! I am OUTRAGED at your sister!! Fat people surgery?! Wow, she should be glad she is NOT MY sister! *sigh*....breathe Leslie....

People will say the stupidest things, remember: Ignorance is Bliss. Period. They are un-educated about the process. Some will say that it is the "easy way out". Well, let me telllll YOU! The easy way OUT is sitting on the couch, gorging and starting that diet on "monday". The easy way OUT is not being able to move, exercise, breathe, or LIVE. That is the easy way OUT,,,OUT TO YOUR GRAVE. We all know how many calories are on a plate just by looking at it because we have been professional dieters all or most of our lives. They don't understand THAT. This journey is NOT easy by ANY means. But it is WORTH IT.

Diet and Exercise...WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT?! !!!!

UGH!! THIS TOPIC ALWAYS BOILS MY BLOOD.

Stay strong, you KNOW that this is the BEST decision for you and your LIFE. No regrets. I would do it 1000 times again and NOW, 6 months out, EVERYONE wants to know what I did, that I look SO great...I HAD FAT PEOPLE SURGERY AND I'M PROUD OF IT!!!!

Don't let ignorance and jealousy spread. Keep your head up and keep on keepin on!

Star Jones does look terrible but most of the photos before/after of VSG, people look healthy with rosey skin. RNY gives people that gray/dried out look. Sorry, it's not a nice opinion but it is how I feel. Maybe you should share some pics of people with VSG who look good. The more you educate the people you have told/are going to tell, the more likely they are to accept it and support you.

Or they tell you about people who die. Now, Nightline just ran a segment on WLS makes people more likely to be alcoholic. When my friend started in on me today, I just told her to go ahead and let her do it, knowing this is going to happen. I reminded her that I need to do this to regain my health. She then went on to talk about her struggles with weight, being on a fast and being short of breath when walking. Great. It just seems to be part of the territory.

I only know of one famous person who has the sleeve and that is rapper Paul Wall. I actually got a picture with him a few years back at his concert, it was before either of us had VSG, I need to get a recent one of the both of us lol!

Me, Paul Wall and my friend

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
