Had My Surgery On Tuesday, 6/12/12

Recommended Posts

I'm so terrified of a leak. My doctor said I can be on full liquids for two weeks and then go to puréed foods for two more. I scared myself today because I had broccoli cheese Soup and had a cramping/spasm feeling on my stomach area I hadn't had since the first day I got out of surgery. Up until then I've had only a little discomfort when using my core muscles because they are sore obviously. I've been walking and trying to get my liquids down pretty good. What does a leak actually feel like? Is it triggered by liquids like soup?? And I've looked up some ways to detect it and barium was suggested... What of my doctor never made me drink barium... Are you supposed to do this before you leave the hospital?

I had to do the barium test the second day after surgery. It was awful! It was like drinking cleaning Fluid. I ended up throwing it all up when it was over. No leaks though. Do not panic over your spasm. My stomach did all kinds of protesting, gurgling, spasming etc for the first several days. It still does if I push too hard. Did you strain the Soup? If not, make sure you strain your Soups until you are safe to go to the pureed phase. If it is still bothering you tomorrow, call your doctor. I hope you feel better quick so you can stop worrying!

My Dr doesn't do the leak test either, he prefers not to stress the suture line when you are first sleeved so he does a test while you are still in surgery and he does put in liquid and goes over the entire suture line.

I think what you are feeling is gas from the broccoli in the Soup - broccoli is known to produce a lot of gas. Maybe try a different soup.

I think anyone who's been sleeved is paranoid of a leak in the early going. I freaked out a few days ago when I got a bout of stomach cramps that turned out to be gas. Just make sure you're eating the right amounts of the right things and you'll be fine.

I was told by my surgeon to only drink clear liquid like chicken and beef broths, sugar free Jello, and sugar free popsicles. Protein Shakes and of course get all your Water in.

I got sleeved on the 12th too. I did have to do the leak test w/ barium. I think you may have just had a spasm. I get a cramping/spasmy feeling w/ almost every drink I take. I am on full liquids right now and am allowed cream Soups as well. I can't wait for the mushy/pureed stage. Only 12 more days.

Have you weighed yourself yet? just curious to see how much you have lost since surgery. I have lost 6.8 pounds so far.

Thanks guys! I took some chewable gas x and feel a bit better. I still have some spasms, but I think you guys are right about everyone just being scared of a leak. I just have to put faith in my surgeon and follow his instruction. Thanks! Oh and so far I list 20 lbs with the pre-op diet and 5 more since the surgery.

My sleeve was done on Wednesday... 6-13-12... I too have spasms when I'm drinking Water. It is sorta painful. I am feeling very tired and it's four days after surgery... I hope I am not getting dehydrated....

I had my my sleeve the 11th & the barium esophogram the next day . It was terrible since I hadn't had anything to drink in 24 hrs ! No leaks detected on the barium study . I also have a JP Drain that I have to drink a half of a cup of green kool-aid three times a day to check for leaks . Unfortunately , it's made me paranoid looking at that damn tube every hour on the hour ! I'm driving my family nuts looking at it all the time ! I've had cream of tomatoe once & it seemed to go down ok , but I got bad pain after eating a cream of potatoe . I'm just trying to get my green kool-aid & Water in now . I also have terrible gas & reflux despite taking omeprazole & gas-x . Can't wait for the purée & mushy stage :))

I was sleeved on the 12th and have a difficult time getting the Water in. I was close to passing out at the store yesterday while shopping for fathers day. I don't know about anyone else but I already don't want to see another Popsicle or drink broth! I am ready to chew something!

We all seem to be having pretty much the same symptoms.... I guess we are pretty average which is kinda comforting.

I, too, was sleeved on the 12th. A good day, I think! :)

My doctor didn't do a leak test -- he said that he would do one if necessary. After being in the hospital for 48hrs, I was sent home on a full liquid diet. I am SO looking forward to the pureed stage also!! I'd really like some "real" food and more of a variety!

Just curious -- do you all use an actual strainer to strain your Soup? So far, I've just used a colander.

As of yesterday, with my pre-op loss of 14 pounds (then a gain from the hospital of 6), I am down a total of 20lbs. So encouraging!

Hooray for us!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
