I am 8 days post op and doing really well with Vitamins, staying hydrated etc but I am having so much trouble getting in Protein.

A) Never hungry (My fantom stomach wants a cheeseburger but really, I am not hungry)

B) I hate all the Protein drinks I was having before surgery and the thought of a Protein shake makes me gag.

C) I can eat a Protein Tomato Soup packet with warm Water but I can only eat a couple of spoon fulls and then I am full for hours.

D) The only thing I want, like and get plenty of is orange gatorade E) I can do a couple of spoonfulls of greek yogurt but once again, full for hours afterwards

I am waiting for the great day when I can go to mushy food but I am affraid I won't be able to eat that either. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Can you put the Soup in a travel mug to keep it warm and just sip on it for awhile? I just got back from seeing a movie and by just constantly sipping was finally able to drink a small [16.9oz] bottle of Water.

I'm not hungry either. food doesn't interest me. I mean it smells good and all but I don't really want it. I only had surgery on Monday so I am VERY new to this. Sorry, I'm not much help. You've got to get some nutrition in tho.

Aren't there some unflavored and/or clear Protein options that you could put IN your gatorade to help?

I'm on a shake a day plus 0 calories fluids for another week. I've been drinking the Ensure Creamy Milk chocolate High Protein shakes. 25g of Protein. Don't know if that's an option. Maybe you could put some coffee flavoring in it to change it up a little?

Best wishes!

Hang in there! I went thru the same thing. I got really creative with Protein Shakes, and yes - the shakes I liked before surgery - well I ended up getting rid of everything except "unjury". I put frozen pudding in it. I even got the flavored sugar free coffee Creamers and used those. Each week something changes tho - 8 days after I was still mostly on shakes and broth. I made my own chicken broth and even flavored it with some teriyaki or soy. Good luck - it definately gets better and better and better. I am 32 days post op -_-

Thanks for the idea of adding something to the broth for flavor. I am still on my pre-op and I would be happy to lick the seasoning off of my daughters chips!

I HATE milk so all of the Protein that taste like milk are killing me.

I would try the Unjury unflavored Protein and put it in your gatorade. I have not been able to get much liquid in and today was finally able to get the Unjury chicken broth in - took all day but I got it in. My Dr said for the first week or two to at least try to get the 32oz of liquid in and try to get what protein you can but first and foremost get in the liquid.

I was the exact same way!! I had a very difficult time with Protein until I was on mushies... Protein shakes just wouldn't stay down and I was full after a few sips of anything! To get it down I sipped, sipped, sipped, just a little at a time. I would get in what I could and try again the next day.

Great job on the Water and vitamins!

I am on one ounce of Clear Liquids every 30 minutes for the first week; my mom keeps telling me I can take more than that but I am scared to do this. Next week I get to add creamy Soups and watered down oatmeal, but same amount. I have not been hungry but have experienced some head hunger. Let's just say I have had to sit through my fair share of southern home cooked meals. My mother in law, husband, and mother who is a sleever herself have constantly been frying stuff from the garden; like okra and tomatoes.... Tonight she did bacon, lettuce, Tomato sandwiches; don't get me wrong I know they have to eat but do we have to smell the whole house up in the process....when I say something she just laughs and says get used to it....however she has been wonderfully supportive in other ways an I am soooo thankful to her!

What does your paperwork say? Are you at yogurt stage? Once there, frozen would probably be okay. Gotta watch the sugars tho.

Frozen yogurt and ensure has a lot of sugars. My surgeon and NUT advises against those because of the sugars and calories.

Anewme,

I had the same issue in my house. My partner made bacon, lettuce and Tomato and I actually had to leave because of the smell of the bacon. Nothing else has made my mouth Water but the smell of the bacon was more than I could take.

Fear not! Bacon is not too far away! You'll be able to have some before you know it! LOL. Unless you are watching your fat... bacon was actually one of the first foods I could tolerate! I eat it a couple times a week now :P

MY Ensure only has 5 grams of sugar. Way less than all the Protein powders in my pantry.

Ensure sounds really good with only 5 grams of sugar! ;)

Thanks a lot guys...just trying to make it. Fighting these mental cravings. Like ...I want a cheeseburger...the mind wants what the body can't eat.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
