Great topic! i am 5 weeks post-op today and i STILL find times:

Problem:

1- when i take to big a mouth full

2- when i take 1 bite to much

3- when i eat to fast

4- when i gulp my Water

Not only do these things make me hurt, but i then beat myself up about it, because i know better!!!

Solution:

1a- I am going to start using a baby spoon (great advice) ..

2a- I am going to put my spoon down between bites (maybe i will recognize when my sleeved tummy is saying its full)

3a- I am also going to stop watching TV while i eat (fall back into old habit of eating to fast)...

4a- go back to day one post-op and drink my Water out of a shot glass (NUT way to not gulp)

Again thank you for starting this subject because it really made me think about being accountable for my own issues!

I had to use a toddler spoon at first and a kid fork It helped SO much.

In my pre-op nutrition class, we were told to buy demitasse spoons and cocktail forks and to use 4 ounce ramekins to hold the food for the first couple of months. I do this for everything that I eat, including yogurt, etc. Having the smaller spoons and forks really, really helps keep the bites small. I did find myself putting another bite into my mouth before I had even swallowed the first bite, so now, I put the utensil down and don't pick it up again until I have swallowed. If it's a new food I am trying, I take a bite, chew really well, swallow and wait a minute or two just to make sure it's going to settle fine. So far, everything has settled well except for Peanut Butter. But, I just started on solid foods so I'm sure there will be some other foods that I will introduce that won't be that kind to me. There rae also some foods that I used to love, that I have no desire to try now, like bananas. I also used to crave salty and savory items like nuts and chips and have absolutely no cravings any longer - which is a good thing!

I can actually gulp Water down without an issue so I still tend to drink fast, but I've not had any issues with it -- not even gas, so I haven't changed that.

I'm almost 2-weeks out and I've been fortunate so far - only thing I've done is gulped my Water once, felt a little pressure, and stopped immediately. A few moments later I was fine. No nausea or other unpleasant side effects. Hopefully I never have problems, but this was an interesting thread!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
