2 Weeks Out And Cheating With Solids

Recommended Posts

Okay, okay, I'm a rebel! I'm only 2 weeks out from surgery and I've been eating solids and experiencing discomfort in my chest. I try to move "things" along with sips but end up throwing up the liquid. Stubbornly, the food stays until it painfully decides to pass. Is there anyone out there that made the same mistake? Did it get better or should I always expect to have the pain?

Please be carefull and try to stick to the meal plan. I know it is hard but you came all this way to suceed. Give yourself 24 hours before eating the food. Try walking anything. Just don't want you to end up sick. Congrats on your success so far.

If you're cheating on ur diet- expect the pain. Follow that to the letter. I know it stinks and you're ready to be normal, but what you're doing is dangerous. It'll go away in like 20 mins. Don't cheat again.

So what you guys are telling me is that this pain isn't something that will last? I also had my hiatal hernia repaired at the same time as my sleeve. I have the discomfort even with liquids. I'm confused as to whether my problem is due from one or both of the procedures. My sincere hope is that I am just being punished for my impatience and that it will be fine after a few more weeks of TLC for my new pouch. Thanks for your responses!

Our surgeons have rules for a reason - I think it is good advice to comply with your post surgical protocol for safety and sucess. See I can't be trusted around food - that is a known issue lol.

What if you cause a leak in your staple line from eating solids? Would it be worth cheating? Please take better care of yourself and not eat solids until later when your stapleline is healed.

I had the same pain...it doesnt last...it will go away but it took me until about the end of month 2 to not have it anymore. I had a case of serious buyers remorse for a while there. thankfully it passed and now I love my sleeve!

I was cleared for mushies after ten days, and I pretty much went to soft foods right around the two-week mark, and so you are not really that off schedule in my opinion. Different doctors have different guidelines for their patients. The important thing to remember is to chew well and not drink when you eat. Sipping while eating is going to cause you discomfort. Try to wait 30 minutes after eating before you take a drink.

Never never never drink when you eat. Did I mention never? You will---as you found out---throw up.

You only have ONE chance to heal, so do it right. Be good girl.

I thought I read that right...that is the first real thing that stuck out to me in her post... It seems that all doctors agree on at least that ONE thing.... dont drink anything for 30 minutes after you eat....

I hope that you go back to following the guidelines, no matter how hard they seem... but I am with the others...our doctors set guidelines for a reason and it seems since you have something extra going on (hernia repair) you may want to stay on track even more

feel better

Like everyone is saying please be safe. A leak could be fatal. You made a choice for a better life through weight loss do not sabotage yourself. This tool will not fail you if you make wise choices.

Thanks to everyone that replied. I had my follow-up visit with my doctor today, and he said all is well. He, too, assured me that the discomfort will pass. Everyday I get more excited about the promise this new direction holds for me.

I've cheated on the full liquid diet, but only with very soft foods like mushy veggies in my Soup and about a tablespoon worth of scrambled egg...even though its mushy I still chew chew chew to avoid the pain...its bad enough when I take a large pill, can imagine just jumping into having something really solid.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
