Most who consider going to Mexico are self pay. So the obvious answer is the cost is a lot less in Mexico than the U.S. Plus there are some very skilled LapBand surgeons in Mexico.

From what I've heard, in Mexico, the proceedure was $6,000 - $8,000. Mine was self pay for a total of $16,000 (in lieu of getting a new car that I didn't really need). But wouldn't a person just about eat up the difference in airfare, lodging, etc. going to Mexico? I just wonder what the final total cost of the trip etc. was? I drove an hour drive to my Dr. and Hospital and so far everything has been great. I financed mine with a credit card locked in at 2.99% int. and with about the same payment as that new car would have cost me. I'll feel much better drining my 5 yr old car skinny, than I would driving a new one fat! :scalesno: I should have it paid off in 4 years with making extra. A good investment I think!

They've been doing the band a lot longer in Mexico than in the US, so Mexican surgeons tend to have a lot more experience with this particular kind of surgery. They also have relationships with cosmetic surgeons who can fix you up post-weightloss for a decent price.

I was a self-pay. Locally the surgery would have cost $22,000. I paid $10,600 which included everything but my airfare. Taxis, hotel, all pre-op testing, the hospital, fills, band removal should it become necessary - ALL included in that price. All I paid extra for was my airfare.

The other big incentive for having surgery in Mexico was my surgeon, Dr. Roberto Rumbaut. He's recognized as one of the best lap band surgeons in the world and has proctored so many of the U.S. doctors now doing the surgery here, that I wouldn't be surprised if he proctored the doc I would have used here if my insurance would have covered the surgery!

Another benefit - Dr. Rumbaut has a gastric band himself so he knows exactly how it feels - when you call him because you've got questions or concerns, he knows exactly how you're feeling. Speaking of calling him . . . I have his cell phone number. His and his assisting surgeon's. If I have a problem I can call him 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and one of them will help me. How many doctors in the U.S. would do that?

It's been great. I would recommend Dr. Rumbaut to ANYONE - and not as a last resort because they don't have insurance. He's simply the best.

I had sx in the US - in Dallas - as a self pay for $11,500. The doc said he gets paid the same but can get better overall prices at certain hospitals. So, I went to a lesser known hospital for the cheaper price. But I'd have paid more to have my surgeon since I just knew he was the one I trusted to do my surgery. I knew I would have to self-pay but I was too scared to go to Mexico!

Two weeks ago my surgeon did emergency surgery on a nurse who went to Mexico to get banded. She almost died. (He said she probably wouldn't last past 10 PM that night) and was muttering "I didn't think it was this bad" over and over during the surgery. It ended up costing her 50,000$ for the surgery, but atleast she is alive.

Her band was too tight and it pretty much destroyed her stomach. My mother doesn't see her eating much for the rest of her life.

Well, if you save $8000 on the surgery itself, even IF you have to fly back to MX for a fill, that's quite a few fills. My airfare, when I flew to MX, was $325. Tickets are running closer to $400 now, but even with the higher airfare and a hotel stay, I could pay for about 16 fills.

In reality, I paid $10,600 for my surgery, $650 in airfare (DH went with me), and less than $50 in food. I'm using a fill doctor close to home, a fill under fluoro is $300, however, insurance is paying 1/2 of that. 3 fills, so I've paid $450 so far.

Grand total: $11,750 If I'd had the surgery closer to home, it would have been $22,000.

I checked at both of the University Hospitals both being 2 hours from me and they had both done less than 100 bands, then I checked with 2 in Paducah Kentucky, both done less than 250 and then I found out that the surgeons in Mexico had done thousands and Dr. Sanchez started doing the band in 1995 and had done 6600 so there was NO trouble in making that decision. I paid 8500.00 plus 500.00 for airfare and our 2 nights stay was included so we were only out 9000.00 for everything and free fills for life. My daughter works at a big hospital and they can't compare to the cleanliness and the suburb treatment I received in Mexico. I would go there if they were the same price because of the experience and my fill Doctor is Dr. Curry and he is in my opinion the best there is. I couldn't be more proud. Got my 2nd fill from him yesterday and he is great if anyone needs a topnotch fill Doctor who accepts Mexican patients.

That's such a scare tactic!! People have major complications in the US after surgery also. I've had pts die after routine surgery in the US. I'm an RN that had surgery in Mexico by Dr Ortiz and I also have his and his assistants cell phone #'s. I've already spoken to the Dr by cell phone with a question. Next time you talk to a surgeon in the US ask for his cell number and see what the answer is. Each person has to make a decision that they are happy with, I would go to mexico for surgery again in a heartbeat. My surgery was $8500, airfare was $600 r/t. Dr Ortiz also fixed 2 hernias which I didn't know I had, and my surgery was still done in 40 minutes.

I don't understand this post. What does your mother have to do with it? Does she know the woman? Was she the surgical nurse? *confused*

I'm not surprised that U.S. doctors are trying to scare people out of going to Mexico. Gastric band surgery is HUGE $$$$$ to U.S. doctors, and only getting bigger and bigger.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
