Looking For High Protein Shots

Recommended Posts

Looking for high Protein Shots. Not sure what bougie size my Dr used, but my sleeve is very tight, and i'm having trouble getting in 8oz. of anything. I have my first follow up with him tomorrow. Any suggestions??

My suggestion is do NOT use the Protein Shots. All of them I have seen contain "hydrolized collagen", which is a Protein that is NOT available to our bodies. So, you could choke the shot down (I understand they taste awful) for basically no benefit. In another forum, I read a post from Tiffykins (one of the vets here) saying the same thing. She even goes so far as to say that you can only count a few of the protein grams in a protein shot, even if it says that whey protein is one of the ingredients. So, if your protein shot has supposedly 60 grams of protein, you can only count about 10-15 of those protein grams. There are MUCH better tasting ways to get that much protein.

Suggestion = don't look for high Protein shots. Search "protein shots" or "incomplete protein" here and you will see why.

Is 8oz your limit at a time, or during the course of an entire day?

BTW Lissa, I heard back from one of the "shot" manufacturers and about 8% of their "combination of whey isolate and hydrolized collagen" was the whey part. So in this shot that's maybe 45gm Protein, about 17% of it was worth anything. Ugh, so much wasted sleeve space. ;)

I hate to triple post, and I feel like I've become their biggest fan, but look at the Isopure RTD fruit flavored Protein drinks. I too have a hard time with regular drinks. They're thick, and I've figured out that my sleeve doesn't like thick things very much. I tried these drinks (40gm per 20oz bottle) and they go down like Water for me. I'm drinking them 1/4 bottle as needed. And they actually taste good (at least the one flavor I've tried, "grape frost" + a squirt of grape mio stuff).

I just ordered 36 bottles. I hope they don't get gross overnight. ;)

Thanks, Wheetsin! I'm starting to feel like a Protein shot hater around here, but they are so useless to us that I hate to see people spend their hard earned money on them. In addition, they give folks a false sense that they ARE getting in their Protein, which is so necessary, when that protein isn't even usable by our bodies.

I think we need to gather up all of the information about Protein Shots being bad, put it in a thread and ask for it to be pinned in both Pre Op and food and Nutrition.

Just to throw this out there ... Protein shots are bad for early sleevers thinking this is an easy way to get their Protein in. It isn't. Serious athletes and weight lifters prefer the blend of whey and collagen based Proteins. Google for more detailed info.

But, for our purposes here on the board as sleevers, the girls are correct ... stay away from Protein Shots.< /p>

Pure Protein ready to serve shakes are best - you can get them at Sam's club, Walmart, etc.

I learned that about Protein Shots also. I gagged a couple down, and for what? A poor source of Protein that our bodies don't absorb like whey isolate. Not only that, but someone here told me that collagen protein can be obtained from boiling cow hides. I was so disgusted I googled it and found that it is true. I like Lissa's idea, people should be warned. Even my NUT had told me they were okay to use! I need to educate her!

Yes - it largely comes from cow hides. Yeah, I eat the dead muscle tissue of animals and really is it that much worse? But still... a girl is entitled to a little hypocrisy... ;)

To PdxMan's point - yes, he is exactly right. In lengthier posts on this even I (shot hater) will admit that collagen Protein has a place in the Protein world (but they taste so bad!). It's just not with us, right now, for what we're trying to get from protein supplements.

Yum:

The basic extraction is generally done using a process of cooking cartilaginous animal materials, such as bones, connective tissues and skin. This process creates Gelatin (a form of collagen that has experienced partial hydrolysis, combining with the Water at a molecular level) and can often be witnessed in the home during the cooking of meat bones into Soup.

Thanks for the input. I am 7 days out and actually had a protein shot sitting on my desk. I was about to open it until I read this thread.

Anyone liking the Isopure RDTs I posted above, they are buy 1, get 1 half at GNC this week. I bought 4 and basically got 1 free. (I ordered 3 cases from a different store online - much cheaper, but they haven't arrived yet).

OMG, those are soooo gross! I tried one and threw it out. Now that I know the skinny on them I am so glad I didnt like them , what a waste. RTD Protein Drinks do it for me but I try to get most of my Protein from foods now.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
