Uh oh! I've been to NY a few times and my arrival to the city always coincides with 9/11...freaky.

You'll be right on the OF. No one is perfect (even if they say they are). Maybe you can have grilled fish with vegies or salad with dressing on the side?

Hey all,

Just checking in! Ended up being pushed back to 11.30 yesterday so was quite groggy all last night. Had a lot of gas pain yesterday but feel ok today. Went for a lap of the ward last night and again this morning which seems to be helping :)

Stomach pains are at about a 3 out of 10 If I'm lying down but seem to just to about a 7 after I move/shower etc.

The thing that's killing me the most is the dry mouth! Argh! It is torture! I'm only allowed three to four sips of Water an hour and just wish I could chug down a litre of it!!

At this stage I'm feeling kind of nervous.. I keep second guessing my decision. It's silly I know because I know I need it to live a happy life but I'm quite depressed about how my eating will change over the next few months and 7 weeks in particular.

Anywho, just thought I'd dump everything in my head on here! Thanks again for the support guys - it makes a huge difference ;)

Hi Susie - glad your op went well and you are coping ok!

Ask the nurses for something for your dry mouth. There are products they can use. It might make you a bit more comfortable. Hang in there!

Hi Susie - glad everything went well and you are on the road to recovery. I think it is pretty normal to have second thoughts at this stage when you are not feeling at your best. I had an awful recovery from the anesthetic and a bad reaction to morphine and through the haze of the first night I remember actual crying 'what have I done, what have I done' - I must have been a right pain for the nurses to look after as I was pushing my button every five minutes!

My surgeon did not allow anything by mouth until I had the swallow test X-ray two days after my op so I can relate to the dry mouth. They can give you mouth washes for dry mouth so just ask.

You will begin to feel better every day and yes the new way of eating is a big adjustment but once you see the results you get you will be thrilled. I actually mourned the way I used to be able to eat when it finally sank in that I would never be able to eat that way again - but I rationalized it that the way I used to eat was the whole problem and was slowly killing me. I also felt that there was a bit of a gap left in my life as so much of the way I did things centred around where, when and what we were going to eat e.g. Whenever we go to the shops, the first thing we would do is get something to eat or we would reward ourselves with a bg fried up Breakfast on Sunday morning!

You have us all here to talk to about your feelings and you can bet that at least one person on here would have felt or has gone through the same thing as you. I have read on other threads how you do actually go through big hormonal fluctuations so feel all sorts of emotions - not sure how accurate that is but I know for myself I have had a few down moments - they usually past fairly quickly once I thought about why I did this and eventually came back to my original reason was that this was the only thing that was ever going to work for me that would enable me to lose the weight and keep it off and save my quality of life/life!

All the best for your recovery and for the next few stages.

So glad to hear you are up and about and not in too much pain. I know I will be mourning the way I used to eat- I do that now already! Watching my family eat huge dinners last night an big Breakfast this morning -as I was sipping away at my celery and ginger juice an a black tea:-/ I think what you are going through is completely normal for everyone to experience. Hopefully they can give you something for the dry mouth too. Hoping you are feeling well enough to go home soon, sending you health and wishes for a speedy recovery!

Hi ladies and gents, seeking post sleevers to past on their wisdom and any advice!! So my surgery date is this coming Tuesday and I'm trying to get prepared as much as I can....so I have some questions if you could kindly give your opinions:-)

Firstly,

*What essential personal items did u take or wish you had packed for hospital?

*My doctor says I will be in for 1 night- I was expecting longer? How many nights were you in for?

*Dr says its very important NOT to vomit after surgery, but some have posted they vomited within minutes of waking? Did you?

*What antacids can/do you use?

*What Protein shakes do you use post op? I have read Optifast is no good post-op.

*I have read some have had a 'last meal' the night before surgery. (I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not) Did you have a last meal and what was it? I read one post had KFC!! O_o Lol.

*Anything essential you think a pre-op SHOULD know before going in?

Thanks guys!! You are all an amazing support system, I look forward to reading your replies! :-)

Good questions! I'll be reading answers with interest.

Re the Protein - did a bit of a comparison the other day, and the Atkins one came in the best I think. I'll be using that one - plus I know it tastes pretty good (as compared to others)

Thanks ozeedonkee! These are last minute things I'm trying to think of. Thanks for the Protein ideas. Trying to get to know what I should have on hand at home, but Aussie products so I know what to buy! Lol.

Definitely don't have a last meal the night before! A guy that was meant to

Go after me ended up being cut open and then stitched right back up because he'd had chicken the night before. Don't take any risks with it! I had a "last meal" the night before I started pre op.

Can't give you too many tips as to what to bring as I'm only on my second night (I was told three to five days in hospital) but I would suggest packing some nice big granny undies! Lol I don't usually wear them but I'm secretly loving them in here! I've also packed my laptop and some movies for if I get bored but I haven't had much time between sleeping and getting up and walking around.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
