Rushed To Emergency With A Bowel Blockage! Need Advise From Other Sleeve Patients!

Recommended Posts

Ok so this may also be TMI and I am sorry for being graphic but I am at my wit's end here. I am 6 months post op, and Thursday night I woke up to by far the worse pain I have ever felt, it was under my breasts, rib area and spreading to my chest and back, on top of it I even blacked out. Taken to closest emergency room which by the way was the worst experience ever besides the hot male nurse who saw me at my worst... let me just say this real quick ...huge peach pajamas..no bra and black socks......no make up..zit cream on my face ...oh yeah embarrassing but what is more embarrassing for the hospital..they never heard of the SLEEVE...yes I said it...no clue. They looked at me like I was nuts! I told them "call my surgeon" at least 100 times..did they call NO!!! They gave me morphine, Fluid, did a cat scan, said I abdominal pain and sent me home...yes sent me home..could have a tear...how would they know right.. they wouldnt even call my surgeon! Can you believe it? My bill will be probably thousands...for what??? Needless to say I called my surgeon in the morning and went right in to be advised I had a bowel blockage, partial but 14 about 12 pounds worth and what do you know right up under my ribs... top of bowel...could they have told me that at the hospital ..NO. Sorry for ranting, I am just so bothered by it! Ok so here is where I need help, my surgeon said no NG tubes so they cannot flush the block and he wants me to clear it on my own by taking citrate magnesium and Miralax combo. I did it but my bowel never ran clear like he said. I have since tried a second time and nothing. I have gone jogging, ran up and down the steps...ate applesauce, drank apple juice, ate prunes, drank prune juice, drank a ton of Water, warm water, metamucil (alot), ate hot food, ate everything whole grain I could find and I cannnot clear this block. It will not work...i clears my bottom bowel but never runs clear like he said. I need to clear it, or it could turn to a total obstruction and I will be hospitalized. I want to avoid that at all costs. Has anyone had a similar issue and please tell me any home remedies you have, I am desperate and will try anything. I bought an enema but am thinking will also just clear lower bowel. I can't go through that pain again ever. This is affecting my job. Last day off today! HELP!!

PS.. I have suffered with Constipation the entire time and I drink 3 glasses a day of a Fiber drink and take stool softners daily. Thanks for any ideas :) On a brighter note I have lost 96 lbs since being sleeved, Ijust want to be healthy

Try 32 Oz of lukewarm Water with 2 teaspoons of non-iodized sea salt (iodized salt will not work) Drink when you get up and on an empty stomach, otherwise the salt will be competing with undigested food. Around 1 hour later eliminations should commence. It's best to set aside 2 hours before you go out, to prevent any accidents.

I had a friend that this would happen to and they would take a really hot bath and massage where the blockage was. They would do this almost ever day when it was really bad they would do this a few times a day but if you do a hot bath a few times a day make sure you moisturize your skin as it will dry out.

If the hospital did nothing, and your doc diagnosed you witout seeing you also, you may need to go get a second opinion - just dont wait till you have to go to the ER, and incur a ridiculous bill. Go to a regular doctor, ask for a white blood cell count, and xray. You need to be sure it is a blockage due to foods and not a twist or impaction that is showing serious problems.

I'm sure the coffee and metamucil won't hurt. It can't hurt to try right? Be fore warned though, the salt Water mix tastes horrible! I personally just put the 2tsp in about 4oz of warm water and take a "shot" at a time, then chug (as much as we can chug) 32oz after

BM 101... :) There are four basic types of laxatives. Be careful which you're taking because without extra precaution, some can do a LOT more harm than good.

1. "Bulking agents" - your fibers, natural or supplement. They bulk up your poop, which helps trigger your body to start contracting it down the bowels. These can do more harm than good, fairly easily. You need to really, really ensure that you are getting more than enough fluids when taking fiber-based laxatives. I've seen people who have taken Fiber without enough fluids basically pooping out... chalk. I'm not sure how else to describe it. There was so much fiber present, and so little Water, that it basically dried the poop up. Think dog poop that has been sitting out in the sun for a week or two, and that's exactly what it was like.

2. Osmotic laxatives - work by pulling Fluid into the bowel via osmosis. Need to make sure you intake extra fluids here, too, but they won't dry you out the way fibers will. They're pulling Water from other parts of your body so you want to make sure you put extra water back in to replace it. When they work you basically have "osmotic diarrhea" which is the same kind of diarrhea people have during sumping syndrome. :) (The behind-the-scenes of dumping is the bowel signaling the body to send extra water its way). Miralax is one of the best osmotic laxatives, IMO. I actually started taking some this morning. Epsom salt is a really common homeopathic osmotic laxative. Magnesium hydroxide (e.g. Milk of Magnesia), etc. Osmotic laxatives also pull water in, period, so they shouldn't have the same "reach" issues that something like an enema would. Sorbitol and a few other artifical sweetners are also osmotic laxatives... that's why SF candies give so many people the runs.

3. Stimulant-based laxatives - basically is to pooping what pitocin is to childbirth. :) They chemically stimulate your bowel to contract much harder than normal.

4. Stool softeners - agents that generally just add Fluid content to your poop. My daughter had horrible Constipation when she was younger, so bad she would tear and bleed when she could finally poop. The best thing we found for her was flax oil added to her drinks and stirred into some Cereal. Worked quickly, and sometimes too well. :blink:

What to take dependson what your problem is. E.g. stool to dry to pass, or soft poops that you're having a hard time getting out, or...

So what else to try: I generally recommend the flax oil, or a bit of something sugary (in your case I'd skip the sugary, I think you might be a bit beyond that stage). I have seen flax oils working nothing short of miracles for the BM-impaired.

Here are some typical treatments:

Sorbitol (70% concentration): 15-60 ml PO daily

Magnesium salts:

(Milk of Magnesia) 15-60 ml PO qd prn

(Manesium Citrate) 8 ounces PO daily prn

Oral sodium laxatives: Phopho soda (Oso-prep, Visicol) 2 tablespoons in 4 ounces water orally

Polyethelene glycol 3350 (Miralax): 17gm dissolved in 240ml/9oz water or fluid (hot, cold or lukewarm)

PO = by mouth

QD = every day

PRN = as needed

A lot more info than you're looking for, I know, but hopefully it can help.

Talk about full of Sh@t huh. Gotta love american doctors and hospitals. I always felt like a guinea pig when I went to er's. I tend to be the one telling them whats wrong rather than vice versa

I know that you were panicking cause I would have also. I hope this is a one time occurance

Stop the Metamucil it will harden in your gut and make your blockage worse. Keep up with the mag citrate until you **** clear. Sometimes it takes awhile to get 12pds of stool moving. It can be like pushing out a boulder through a straw. It takes time to break up. We use this a lot on our hospice patients and have great success. Sometimes it just takes awhile. Remember to drink lots of Water. Good Luck!

      2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

        Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
