I work as a nurse as well night shift. I had a hard time adjusting. On busy nights it's really hard for me to take in my fluids and eat.... I also retain 2-3 lbs of Water. Whenever I work i noticed that I wont loose weight until a day or two after my shifts are over .

So crazy that y'all posted this cause I'm also a night nurse that recently returned to work last night I felt hungry more often but then again I'm not able to sit down and eat a meal so I'm constantly picking at my lunch throughout the whole shift and trying to get enough calories in cause I know how much I need them especially cause I'm constantly going for 12 hours . The dr said at my two week follow up that when your not getting enough fluids that your body will retain Fluid so im sure that's why we tend to retain Water cause we probably aren't getting enough fluids in cause I know as hard as I work even though I think I'm getting a sufficient amount of fluids as hard as we work we need double the amount that we usually get which is obviously easier said than done !!! I know that was a huge run on sentence but oh well haha :-) oh yeah and happy nurses week to my fellow nurses !!!

i work on a neuro unit where most of my patient cannot turn, walk, and talk. we have a lift team that comes around every so often and sometimes i can ask my coworkers but how long after you had the surgery did you guys go back to work?i dont want to tell my coworkers about the surgery. theyre all nosy and gossipers as it is. after reading this thread its kind of discouraging knowing because i work night shift that i will retain the weight and my progress will be slower:( i have yet to have the surgery because the money but also because i need to request the days off first. i work three 12s a week so i can probably get 6 to 8 days off in a row. im going to Dr. Ortiz at the OCC in mexico so i believe its one day hospitalization and 2 days in a hotel. then its off home.

I'm not a nurse, I work nights in an office, so I have limited movement. I went back to work 3 days post op, but my results have been great. I'm 2 months out and down almost 50 lbs since surgery. I went into the operating room weighing 270, and as of yesterday I weighed 229. Hope that helps. The loss was slow at first, but now I'm averaging about 5 lbs/week

I went back two weeks post op. I am a nurse on a heavy post op med/surg floor, and the first two nights I can say I was sore, but I was glad to get back into a routine. The one condition I had going back was NO LIFTING. My coworkers knew that I had my sleeve done so I have no issues asking anyone for help. In fact last week I had a small elderly lady who probably was 80 lbs soaking wet, and u went to reposition her and a coworker walked by and saw me and immediately stepped in and did the moving for me. Also, keeping up in hydration is a challenge. I have Water bottles at my work station and the nurses station so I always have water nearby. If you don't think you will have support and coworkers helping you out when it comes to lifting and moving patients, you may want to take that extra time off...

Good luck! There are so many of us night shifters here!! ????

So im going to try and go back to work after 8 days. Im hoping that because im fairly young , 24, that maybe i can do it. But you know how when you are stressed and your body goes into flight or fight mode n all the blood gets shunted to the priority organs? I think this is what causes me to get stomach pains during my shift. Im still getting the hang of things at my new job. Luckily i told our lift team bout my surgery so they have a heads up on my needs for turning a pt. omggg... I told a few coworkers im going to have surgery so they can also help me n they all asked what kind of surgery it was and i said a cholecystectomy! I couldnt think of anythinggg! I wasnt prepared for them to ask! But i told them to keep it a secret. I dont know if gallbladder problems arise in 20 somethings. I just dont want problems to arise wen i need to ask for the time off ( schedules not finalized yet).

I had my surgery with Dr. Ortiz on Monday April 16th. I just took a week off from work and flew back home on Friday. I wanted some extra time in Cali and am glad that I took it. I felt fantastic and still do!!! :)

How are we doing night shifters? My weight loss has been great so far, 19.5 lbs ( as of last thurs) and I have been doing better with drinking fluids. I make sure I fill my large water bottle at least 3 times during my 12 hr shift. Challenges Are always the Snacks that coworkers bring in.. But I always have something on my own (usually sugar free pudding). I have been sleeping better during the day and u contribute that to all the Protein and hardly any carbs still at this point. No lifting yet but coworkers always chip in... I see my surgeon sometimes on my floor ( i work on the post op bariatric floor) and he always says how proud he is of me and that always makes me smile :))

Congrats on the great results! I was sleeved 3/12, surgery weight was 271, as of today my weight is 225! I'm very pleased with the results considering my job is as an analyst so I sit and stare at a computer screen for 10 hours a night.

Hello my fellow night owls! Things have been going well for me lately. I am now losing about 2-3lbs a week, was sleeved 3/12 with a starting weight of 235 I am now down to 181! So I am pleased with how things are going.

Staying awake all night has gotten easier, sleeping well during the day but I am still having a real hard time trying to get in enough fluids and have now started having some dizzy spells. Working in L&D I am sometimes in pushing with a pt for 2-3 hours without a sip of Water. I am trying to hydrate well prior to work but doesn't always work out. Also my hair has started coming out in huge amounts so I am struggling with that and trying to remind myself I won't be bald lol. I am not having any issues with all the Snacks laying around and have actually found a Protein Bar at Walmart called Premiere Protein that has 30grams of protein in a bar and actually tastes pretty good so I will snack on that instead of chips and candy. I do however miss Pepsi and sometimes daydream about having one haha! For the most part things are going really well and I am so happy I had the sleeve! Looking forward to seeing how the rest of the nightshifters are doing!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
