Did You Quit Coffee? If So, How?

Recommended Posts

I stopped drinking the Precious( coffee) two days before I started my pre op diet. I only ever drank one cup a day, just to peel my eyes open and make everything look real good at workJK

But on day 3 with no coffee AND that was the first day of my pre op diet, I had one of my worst Migraines ever So bad in fact, I wasn't able to go to work, but the next day, headache was just that, not a Migraine. I have missed it, but not felt too bad now without it. I'm being sleeved in two days( April 24). I guess there is just no easy way to give up coffee, Good Luck to you!

It will be worth your effort.

I didn't quit coffee pre op. My last cup was the day before surgery. I figured if I got a headache post op I would be on pain meds that would take care of it. ;) I have had some Decaf since surgery, but I am sure I will miss my caffeine tomorrow when I return to work!!!

I weened down to one medium Dunkin coffee in the morning and then just cold turkey stopped. The day after my nutritional visit before surgery is when I stopped. Miss the java every day! But it has been 130 days and it is a small price to pay to avoid dehydration!

I have to confess that I don't remember anything about my Doctor or NUT mentioning coffee. I was a 3-4 cup a day drinker. When I started my pre-op diet, I got down to just 1 cup a day. I went without coffee from the day of surgery until Day 4. I went right back to 1 cup a day (although it was a really tiny cup at the time - I have a Keurig that let's me select the size of cup I want), and can now drink a large cup daily. Once in a blue moon I might have 2 cups. However, I have days where the acid in the coffee wreaks havoc with me and sends me running for the bathroom, but it's not a daily occurrence.

I thought the no caffeine thing was more of a suggestion than a command. I drink more coffee now than ever. About 3 cups a day with sugar free creamer only. Even with zero sugar it satisfies my sweet tooth and helps me get through my day. Before surgery I drank a ton of sweet tea but I don't drink any now.

I drank a couple of cups in the morning per-op, but now I don't seem to want it. It didn't taste right.

I cut my coffee with 50% decaff so it is still dark and strong without as much punch! ( I changed my way of eating 3 wks ago and don't surg date yet.)

I went cold turkey the day I started the 2 week liquid pre op diet. Vicious, raging headache for two straight days, then it was over. A couple weeks out after surgery, I reintroduced my beloved beverage, but only one cup a day. My surgeon said this is fine. (I think it's the first question I asked them, if I could still drink coffee! ;) )

My surgeon insisted on a coffee detox prior to surgery, so I wouldn't be dealing with post surgery issues AND a massive coffee headache and whatnot.

That is pretty much what I was told at the support meeting.. Quitting coffee while starting the pre-op is crazy tough ;) .

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
