What Is It Like Years From Now?

Recommended Posts

This surgery is pretty new..gastric sleeve has only been around for about six yrs...so how are these folks doing now? Would love to hear from people that are oldies with the surgery.

Hey I'm not exactly an oldie but I can tell you that this surgery has been around a long, long time for stomach cancer and ulcers and such. It is new as a stand alone procedure for weight loss. My mother in law had abut 3/4 of her stomach removed about 30 years ago because of bleeding ulcers and she is doing great.

Thank you for replying. Was she able to maintain her weight all these years?

She didn't do it to lose weight, although she did lose a lot at first and has kept the majority of it off. She eats lots of sweets so I would say the fact that she has kept any of it off is due to not having but 1/4 of a stomach. lol I think that the fact that we are doing for weight loss will make us concious of not regaining. ( that made sense in my head) lol

I have no regrets...I do wish I could have had it done at 29, when I was done having babies, I'm 44 now. God knows.

The only cons are not being able to drink with my meals, and it does at times get depressing not being able to eat more food. But that's what keeps my weight down, SO WORTH IT!

My peak weight was 234. I started on this forum at 216. Surgery weight 204 and my lowest weight has been 144 (and that's with trying to maintain by adding sweets). I have been in maintenance for 10 months and bounce between 144-148.

That is great. I am very happy for you. I think i would also find it depressing not being able to eat so much..but you are right that is the point. 144 sounds like a great weight. I am 207. So not being able to drink with food..how does that work? Do u eat first and drink slowly later?

I have to wait 30 minutes after I eat to drink :(...sometimes I have to choose, drink or eat LOL!!! It's worth it. I've been drinking and eating at the same time for basically all my life, so this is a huge adjustment. But again, worth it!

Yes I can eat anything. White breads do not sit well, like rolls, or regular sliced white bread. What's funny is I can eat quesadillas though as well as pizza, and even a biscuit with egg, very interesting.

No what happens is that my sleevie actually hurts...I tried eating a roll before dinner and ouch! It was terrible. It just sits at the top of sleevie...so I just don't eat it.

But again, it's a small price. No rolls, or bread sticks for me, but it's all good. I eat Pasta several times a week, rice, and the other things I mentioned with no problems so it's alllll good :)

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
