Moi! I'm hoping to run a half marathon by then too! I'm (crosses fingers) hopefully getting sleeved next month but I already can run a 5K distance (albeit rather slowly. I'm part of a running group called The Turtles!). As for tips the best one I've found so far is to go get fitted for real running shoes by people who know what they're doing. Apparently my feet pronate slightly and these shoes made my ankles, knees and hips feel so much better!

I've run two half marathons this year already and you should look up fern. She has done one and is doing 4 more this year. She can offer a number of tips. You WILL run into special challenges, primarily from our inability to consume calories like others and even though we are taught Protein, protein, and more protein, you will need carbs to complete the race. Best of luck and rock your sleeves!

I am having surgery on April 10th and wondering if I will be healed enough to run a 5k by June 10th?

I've run a half and training for a full. It is an amazing experience! I suggest joining a local run club. They give a lot of great advice and general camaraderie. I agree that getting professionally fitted for running shoes is a must. Like Massindex mentioned above we have a few challenges when it comes to hydration, carb loading, and in-run nutrition but all are easily overcome. I'm happy to answer any questions I can. I will be doing 10 miler in Sept and a half in Oct to prep for my marathon.

Vsg021412- I'm a little worried about you run/walking 13.1 miles just four weeks out from major surgery. That distance is intense for those in the best of health. If you haven't already, please check with your physician and be very careful. I'm not sure your stomach is healed enough to take in the needed fluids and nutrition for this distance.

Hi Arj1016-

This depends on a few factors mainly how quickly you heal, your current fitness level and your goal. If you're okay with a leisurely walk and unconcerned with the finish time then you should be fine. If you're hoping to mainly run and you're not currently a runner that could be problematic. Most surgeons don't clear patients for running until six weeks out which means you'd only have two weeks to train. That just isn't enough time.

I was extremely tired and low on energy until about my sixth week. I couldn't have seriously exercised to save my life... It took all of my energy to get through my day. That quickly picked up in the weeks that followed. I think you have a much greater chance of actually running a 5k closer to five months out. I hope this helps!

I already saw the Dr and he said I was ok to do so. I was walking 8 miles 4 days after surgery I feel great and belong to a great team who all know of my surgery and have been very supportive and I started with this group 8 weeks before surgery for training. Thank you for your concern :-)

Oh, good. I was really worried. 13.1 is still a big jump from 8 miles while healing, though. Just be sure to listen to your body out there. Okay, I'll shush now. :)

I'm not quite understanding how people are so active immediately after surgery?? I refused the narcotic pain meds and am still very sore. I'm 3 days post op and can't wait to be jogging again but with how sore I am, it won't be for a while!

Hey Riss!! Congrats on wanting to run! I just finished my first half marathon a couple weeks ago at Disneyworld. It was awsome!!! I bawled like a baby when I crossed that finish line ;)

I'm doing 4 more this year and my last one booked this year ( so far) is in Disneyland in September. Any questions you have please ask away. Check out the fitness part of the forum. Especially the muscle depletion thread. We talk alot about running and carb loading etc. Can't wait to see those pics of you crossing that finish line!!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
