Your Over Weight Friends?

Recommended Posts

I am interested in how this will play out as well. I have quite a few friends who have had some sort of weight loss surgery, with varying results. Also, I have some overweight friends who have not had surgery. I feel that being overweight, we look for acceptance in friends like ourselves and I fear that over time we will not have the condition of being overweight to bind us together. Kind of like we are leaving a very exclusive club.

I haven't been able to socialize too much lately and I don't work at the moment so much of my interaction is online (Facebook, email). Because of that, I don't know how these relationships will change in person when I reach my new normal. I do already feel less tolerant of food addiction behavior because I have lost most of my interest in food. What will the people at Facebook do now that I don't want to upload pictures of my every dinner?

I had a friend who decided to get banded and she quit talking to me a few years ago. It was like she cut out her "overweight" friends. Makes me sad!

Most of my friends are normal weight and so far they haven't said anything too negative about it. I haven't told any of them I had this surgery and I don't know if I ever will. I have only told 3 people. My BF,mom, and dad.

My family on the otherhand makes me wanna scream. My younger brother who is a jokester keeps telling me I am anorexic and that I need to eat something. He keeps telling me that I never eat. He is overweight and I am sure he is just jealous. Part of me gets mad and the other part of me is a little giddy that he notices I am losing LoL.

My mom and dad are both overweight and know I had VSG and they seem pretty supportive. Sometimes I can sense some jealousy from my mom, but she tends to always set up these competitions between the two of us for some reason. My Dad keeps telling me he is worried that I am going to lose too much weight. I tend to take everything overboard so it is a valid concern. I am not worried about it. I kind of want to get too skinny just to hear one person say it. I have never heard it and I wanna hear it once in my life LoL

I haven't been sleeved yet but I'm interested to find out.I have two overweight friends, I barely see them so even if they were negative it wouldn't affect me if we didn't continue to be friends. At first one of them seemed like she would be jealous, trying to scare me out of it. I'm sure she would prefer we were both big. We shall see and I will keep you updated.

They are monitoring me VERY CLOSELY! I guess to see if they want to be sleeved. I have an obese hater at my job...and she is very kind to me now but always looking at me out the corner of her eye. She is waiting for me to fail. We were doing a weight loss challenge last summer and she wouldn't let me b on her team :( ..But... I guess I am the winner now :) She is a big meanie but I try to get her to see that there is no reason to hate on me. Oh well, that wasn't even the question anymore lol. Sorry, guys!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
