Help! Is This Too Little, Right Amount Or Too Many Calories?!?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, hope all my fellow sleevers are doing great! I have a question though... This is week 5 for me and my dietitian wants to bump my calories to 1000-1300. I've been eating between 500-600 calories for the last couple of weeks and anything over 800 seems like a lot to me. I've been getting in enough Protein with the amount of calories I eat now and I'm worried if I bump them up too much that it will either slow down my weight loss or end it completely. I seem to be over obsessive with food and my scale so maybe I'm looking into this too much... Please let me know how many calories you're getting in daily and how far out you are; any advice would help. Thanks and many blessings! :)

Be careful not to get into that mindset where you don't want to eat because you're afraid it's too many calories. 1000-1300 isn't too many calories. Especially if you're getting in some type of calorie burning routine.

If it slows down the weight loss, that's ok. This isn't a race... you have taken on a lifestyle change and now you have the rest of your life to get to where you want to be. In fact I always say, don't think of how you'll turn out next month. Instead consider yourself one year from now. It's much more realistic... relax a little bit. Again, this is for life... and since you've taken the steps to be healthier, you just added on a whole lot of years of living!! Enjoy it.

My surgeon said dont count calories, just worry about the Protein and dont eat too many carbs. They follow the 70/70 rule. 70 of Protein and not more than 70 of carbs. I ate about 400-600 calories for the first 5 months and then it just naturally went up to 800 as I could eat a little more at 6-7 months. I would not force food to get a calorie count! My dr. said eat protein first and stop when you are full. If its 600 calories a day, so what! We are not here to count every damned thing. We did this so we can eat good healthy food and STOP when we are full. I am afraid if you are comfortable with the 600 calories and full, if you try to stuff in the other calories, you will do damage to your sleeve, stretch it some or God knows what. If you are eating protein first, you are doing the right thing. Just stop eating when you are full and dont worry about the calories. :) The weight will come off. Some people have a low metabolism, like me, and if I crammed in 1000-1300 calories a day, I would not lose weight. I would literally have to eat snickers as Snacks to get that many anyway. If you are eating healthy food, its hard to eat that much that early out. I would not push it. It will increase slowly in time and by the time you are a year out, you will be able to eat more. This is your golden weight loss time and I would embrace my restriction while I have it this good.

I know there are sleevers out there that can and do eat that many calories a day and that works for them but my sleeve is small and he said "hell no, we wont go" to more than about 800 calories a day at 7 months out. Im sure I could eat 1300 calories of junk slider food, chips and candy bars but thats not why we got sleeved, right? Just my 2 cents.

Love this Forensikchic haha. You're right, I'm not going to push it and just eat the amount that my sleeve is comfortable with. Thanks so much for the advice :D

I refuse to get sick just to eat the calories set down by the doctor. I eat what my sleeve will allow me to eat and not a morsel more. I eat Protein first then veggies and I still get in a low fat treat (popcorn, ice pop). I am only 13 weeks out and can only manage about 600-700 calories a day out of the 1100 they want me eating.

I agree don't push it just eat what your sleeve will let you without getting sick and with out eating junk. Don't worry about calories worry about Protein.< /p>

The sleeve won't stretch, but that is sure a lot of calories. It's true they told me only to count Protein and keep the carbs down, but that would stall my weight loss I think. I am eating quite a lot of very good food and only managing 600-800 calories and I am 8 weeks out or so. I'd have to literally eat butter if I wanted to get to 1300 calories. There is just no room in my sleeve for 1300 calories of healthy foods.

Don't push it. Eating too much makes me sick - I mean really physically sick.

There are different opinions on here. If you can get your Protein in I would personally stick to eating the lowest amount of calories. Your portions will get bigger naturally over time and if your skin is going to be saggy I also believe it doesn't matter how fast you lose it - It will still be saggy even if you lose it slow. To me it is a race. I can eat WAY more than I could in the beginning. I am glad I couldn't eat anything the first 6 months. My body had more than enough reserves to manage organ function and I got enough fluids in. My body is not starving. I am probably eating about 1000 calories a day now. I TRY SO HARD to EAT LESS, but there is no way. I figure in another couple of months I should be around 1500 calories. That is a good place for me to be in maintenance - hopefully.

How are you doing with the popcorn? I miss it, but everybody has a dire warning that you should wait 6 months. I eat nuts and seeds and everything else under the sun. Just wondering if there is anyone out there that caused a leak or abscess caused by popcorn roughage.

I like this post...

I just want to clarify... I was not conveying anyone should PUSH to get in 1,300 calories, especially early out. I couldn't do it, I wouldn't expect anyone else to either. Definitely DON'T eat more than you can just to get the calories in. I was referring to not worrying about it so much to where it becomes obsessive. We will all be able to eat more in time.

Protein first, complex carbs next and if you can fit more in then everything else last.

Our sleeves won't "stretch" rather they will become less swollen over time, thus allowing more room in.

Just eat what you can, and make it the most healthy choice possible. That's all.

Thanks. I know you didn't mean to push it, but sometimes nutritionists seem to be pushing at times. The mostly Protein, veg and fruit and then good carbs (high protein bread/crackers) seems to be working for me.

Glad we have you folks that have met or exceeded goals here to give us the benefit of your experiences. Hope you all stay for years to come so we can squash the idea that there are no long term examples of successful sleeve patients.

As for the popcorn I have no upper teeth so all I can do is suck the popcorn and spit out the hulls (roughage). I had not seen the WARNINGS about popcorn hmmmm maybe better rethink it then.

I am still between 600-800 calories a day, and am about 7 weeks out. I am not losing as fast as I'd like, but this is the amount of calories I can get in, so this is what I eat....I think probably when I can eat a bit more my body will be happier, but it's a process, right?

I had been wondering about calories as

Well. I can only tolerate 400-600 a day. I am 5 weeks out. I see my doctor and nutritionist this week and they better have enough time for me cause I have tons of questions. Lol

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
