Ok.. so I have a surgery date of April 16th so my time is getting near therefore I'm really starting to think about certain "things".... I am waiting to hear back from my surgeon on this question but figured I would post it here and get some feedback. Pretty much everywhere I read Gastric Sleeve surgery removes 85% of the stomach. Well.... I guess I am a lil nervous about that. Why can't they remove maybe 60 or 70%?? It just seems very extreme to me especially since it's a permanent surgery. A lot of folks I have seen have also had a very rapid weight loss.. Some are losing 25-30lbs a month.. Are we able to choose the size of our sleeve? I really don't want to lose my extra weight that fast. In a perfect world I would like to lose 10-15lbs per month. This is really the only issue I am having at the moment.

Your feedback is appreciated! :)

Thanks!

Your surgeon chooses the size.....its not negotiable. They need to remove enough so that there is no fundus remaining....if there is....it will just stretch back out and you will be able to over eat again.

The surgeon will do a size/shape that he thinks is best when he goes in....thats why your choice of surgeon is so important and to be comfortable with what he is doing. Removing 60% would just stretch back out eventually.

The fast loss does not last.....the stats you are quoting 25-30/month is first/second month tops....after that its more like 2-3 lbs a week. You will be wishing it was coming off faster after that.

Finally.....it IS a radical and permanent surgery. You choose to do this because you have NO other options. It's your last resort. If you feel you have other options available to you....then take them.

I have also read a lot of things that say 85% but my surgeons info said they remove approx 70%. I also see a lot of people losing more quickly than I am. I'm 3 weeks post op and I've lost 12 pounds since the day of my surgery.

Actually is says "it reduces the capacity by about 70%".

The 85% figure is just an estimate, after all what does it really represent? The surface area? The capacity empty? The capacity full? And is this before or after the stomach is stretched out after a big meal?

Just remember that a LARGE portion is removed, after a few months you WILL be able to eat healthy NORMAL portions, but remember that HEALTHY and NORMAL are NOT what you ate before, and indeed not what MOST people eat today. It is a lot smaller.

85% sounds shocking BUT IT IS JUST A FIGURE, YOUR ACTUALLY % MAY BE LESS OR MORE.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
