Would You Have Done It?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

If you did not have any complications before surgery - like high BP, high sugar, asthma, sleeping apnea etc., would you have considered WLS (just for the sake of losing weight) at the time you did? Or would you have waited and tried other diets and work out regimen? Just curious..

I didn't have any co-morbidities before surgery--I was just fat, and saw myself becoming fatter and fatter unless I did something to totally change my life. So glad I picked VSG.

Yes I considered WLS "just for the sake of losing weight". I only knew about my sleep apnea after I decided to have surgery. Othere than that I had no obesity related health issues. I knew it was a matter of time though and that is why I did it. Diabetes runs in my family. Also I gave Weight Watchers my all and failed time and time again. I knew diet and exercise alone wasn't going to do it for me. Hope this answers your questions.

Yes, I have to say I would. I didn't even know I had high blood pressure and sleep apnea until after I started this whole process. Diabetes runs in my family, and of course I was avoiding that.

But honestly, my main reason is that I was miserable. My self esteem was at an all time low.

I have hope now. AND I have to say, I'm looking better everyday!! (notice that esteem is back!)

I was considering wls before I was diagnosed with diabetes. I had tried to loose weight and had failed. This is the best decision I could make for myself. ;)

I did not have any medical issues except being over weight.. Diabetes is big on my fathers side of the family and it scares me to death. I just lost my father last April due to complications and after watching his issues it scared me. I was sleeved on Dec 14th and am down 25 pounds!! I want to lose 60 so I'm almost half way there. I'm not going to lose it all in a month or two. It's going to take me several months to a year to meet my goal. I do not regret it at all..

I had zero medical issues before being sleeved.

After being sleeved I've been hospitalized 3x and am on more medications than I ever have been before.

If I knew then what I know now- no. I would not have done it.

I felt the same way the first month or so. I really would not have done it all over again. I had no co-morbidities and felt I had harmed myself, not helped. Now, I have recoverd, can eat, and feel better than I ever knew I could. Its hard at first, but it does get better

I didnt have any co-morbidity's either. I did this to lose weight, and get healthy before it was to late. It dawned on me that I needed to make a change when I was buying life insurance so that my family would be taken care of when I died from being over weight. That was my wake up call. I would do it over in a heartbeat!

Thanks for all the replies.. The main reason I chose WLS was because both my parents had a family history of diabetes and I was SOOO scared. I guess, if not for that, I would have waited some more time, probably chosing WLS in my mid 30s. I only started considering WLS this last year (2011) after a family friend had it done. Wouldn't have had the courage to go through if not for this board!!

Hi

I just had my VSG on Feb 13th and have had nothing but complications. I choose WLS strictly to loose weight even though I have HBP. Everyone tells me it will get better ( I hope) but if you asked me right now my opinion, I would never have done it if I knew it would entail what I am experiencing. I would rather have stayed overweight and continued to diet the way I had. Good Luck to you though. I just wanted to be honest because I wish someone was honest and warned me before.

Minnie, Can you elaborate on why you feel the way you do?

I was sleeved just last Feb 6th. Every day I feel more alive than I have in many years. I had no health issues, other than born w a heart defect. I felt breathless a lot. That seems even better. I did surgery because I was hating myself for being so out of control. I wanted to get my life back.

I am so sorry for any one who has had problems. Life is hard enought, right? Right now, I'm doing great and hope problems stay away from me!

Ditto. Plus it's not like I hadn't ALREADY tried all kinds of diets, workouts, and what not.

I didn't have any comorbidities. My knees were starting to complain though. And I was just plain tired of the battle, and waking up miserable every morning. I tried hard to do it the old-fashioned way but I'm 47 and the odds weren't in my favor. I've spent too many years feeling bad about myself.

This is the best thing I have done, other than marrying my precious husband.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
