Dr. Garcia And Team Are Awesome!

Recommended Posts

That is exactly how I felt. My BMIis 33. I am making a life change. If I could be thin on my own I would be already. If you are serious then make the call. No one has to know if you don't want them too! I haven't told anyone and don't plan on it. This is the one thing in my life I choose for me only!! I deserve it. Good luck with your decision.

I too am a "lightweight" with a BMI of 35 and am seriously considering having this surgery with Dr. Garcia. It's not an easy decision and of course, my friends and family think I'm crazy. Thanks for all the great information you all have posted about Dr. Garcia.

Did any of you talk to him directly before your surgery? It feels so strange scheduling all of this over the phone and via email.

I am planning to use Dr Kelly but my BMI is 35. So you're not alone! :)

I wonder if the weight loss is slower with the lower BMI?

I also had a wonderful experience with Dr Garcia. Never any pain walked a lot out of boredom. Only knew I had surgery because of the restrictions. Excellent staff. The nurses were even quite amusing and jovial.

I had surgery with Dr Garcia in Dec 2011. If you speak to your coordinator she should be able to put you in contact with Dr Garcia. I know that he is very hard to reach during the day due to his surgery schedule. I think I might still have his number if the coordinator can not help you.

Ok so I am new to the forum' date=' and have been stalking you guys for a while...lol ! I am excited and nervous to take the leap into surgery. I have contacted Dr's and have all of the financial end squared away, but I am scared to make the final call to schedule the appointment. I know that you were all probably the same way at first also....right?

Here are my issues, I am not a high BMI, actually a 31, and peolpe always say that I don't look like I weigh 200lbs. But I have struggled with my weight for the past 10 years, and I think that my body has set this "limit" on my weight loss. I would rather do the surgery and be able to enjoy the rest of my life, than try every fad diet that comes along whlie I'm trying to tell myself that I'm happy.

I know that I'm generally healthy, I have never had any medical issues, and besides having my son 7 years ago, I have never had to go to the hospital. So I'm here watching all of your amazing success stories and getting the nerve to be amongst the losers, forever!

Thanks for listening to me ramble, but I needed to vent and I haven't told anybody else my plans...til now <img src='http://www.bariatricpal.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

That's me I always struggle with my weight my whole life always dieting even got down to 124 kept it off for 5yrs got sick and then the weight came back on, I really didn't worry til weight Got to 200lbs with a BMI 29-30 now I'm 242. but I have been weighting my options for the last 8-10 years while more weight pack on me and every time I just let people talk me out because I didn't look that fat to them, well now I look a mess but this time I told 5 people and not telling anybody else until I have surgery. But behind this story is do what's best for you because more the likely you'll gain more weight then and you'll regard it. I'll get my sleeve 6days and I'm so excited. Well I guess I said a full mouth Lol

Hi BarbieB. I am going to see Dr. Garcia for sleeve on April 9, 2012 - day after Easter, from Jacksonville Florida. I see you also came from Florida. I'll be traveling along.....do you think thats OK since its such a long trip? I am a pretty strong & smart gal so not too worried. And tidbits you can fill me in on that may help me with trip and experience besides packing lightly...lol.

Also, you mentioned you had to call for meds...what meds? Did they not send you to hotel with enough and also why did you need money for them? I am hoping the costs cover everything.

Sorry for so many question but one more....did you stay in hospital 2 nights or 1 and did you get a private room.

Thanks for taking the time to answer all my questions. I hope your recovery and weight loss is going well.

Your neighbor from Florida!

FinallyMe

ps. i f you want to email me privately or call that would be great, my email is gunningstudios@gmail.com and I'll send you my phone number from there.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
