What Is The Limit On How Many Grams Of Fat We Can Have A Day?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering bc I am now allowed to eat anything. I have been trying to get lean Proteins in first. I have these chicken wings that are already cooked and you just heat them but there is like 11 grams of fat in one serving! Everything else I eat has like 1.5-3 grams of fat per serving! It's just chicken,no breading,so I am wondering if anyone knows how many grams of fat we are supposed to have a day? Thanks in advance!!

I don't really worry about fat grams much at all. I used myfitnesspal to track and so long as I wasn't "in the red" on my fat totals for the day I didn't worry about it. It's hard to keep your fats down on a Protein based diet!

And fats aren't our enemy, either. Post op you might have issues with dry hair, skin and nails. Think about how much fat you ate pre-op and you will probably realize that even eating more fats now that you'd like, you're still nowhere near your earlier totals. We need fat, at least in moderation. We need fat to absorb certain nutrients from our food. It makes us feel satisfied after a meal, and it makes our food taste better.

So look up what the percentage of fat should be for your calorie intake and start there. Don't go low-fat everything, it's not good for you! Eat that chicken, it sounds like a good option.

I was typically running in the 30-40g of fat per day, with some days down in the 20's and others in the 50's. I didn't control fat or carbs, just Protein and overall calories and trying to maximize the nutrition within those limits. I don't/didn't specifically try to go low fat, but at 9 calories per g of fat, my brain sure wanted to make the most of those calories, but if your protein and calories are in within your guidelines (or close), go for it.

Thank you all for your responses. I tried looking it up on the internet and it was based on how many calories I am taking in. Right now I am only getting like maybe 500 calories tops so I should have like 40 somethin grams of fat?

I don't really track fats. But I have switched to buying all low-fat or reduced fat things. Can'r handle fat free really for the taste so I don't go there. I concentrate more on carb and sugar content.

Hey sleeve sister my kaiser book it said less than 10 grams per serving. I don't follow that yet because we eat so little now I know I'm getting less than 10 grams of fat per meal but will focus after my one month surgiversary.

Yea,I think I was freaking out bc I stalled at like a week and a half. But it only lasted for about a week, now I'm back to dropping. It's easy to become obsessed about the weight coming off,I had to give my scale to my mom and step back for a minute and collect myself...lol.

At 9 calories per gram of fat, that doesn't leave a lot of room for your Protein. At this point (and for most of your weightloss period for that matter,) you should be concentrating on getting in your requisite Protein (60-80g per day is typical, more for some) and not worry about fat and carbs until you are consuming more, as in about 800 cal per day if you go that high. Even at that, I never worried about fat and carbs, but just protein, Water and then getting the most nutrition from the remaining calories in my day (which for me was typically 900-1100 overall).

I haven't gone lowfat at all. I do 2% dairy and try to eat lean meats, but not always. My daughter and I went to Buffalo Wild Wings and I ate 2 Asian Zing Wings and one of their hottest - my lips went numb. Anyway, I can eat 3 wings and they are not lowfat, but at that quantity, who cares? I also had 3 oz. of ribeye last night. I get between 600-700 calories with about 30-35 grams of fat. What I do is try to keep the carbs down which isn't hard since I don't do bread, Pasta or rice. I still do potatoes though not every day.

Thank you for your responses. I guess I was just worrying about the fat content bc I hit a stal at 1 week and a half out. =(

Hey, so, if you're stalling a week and a half out, that's totally normal. I dropped like 20 pound sin 2 weeks, then slowed, then sped up again, then slowed, and now 7 months out I'm about 1-2 lbs a week. Stalls happen. It's part of the process. I wouldn't rush into fatty Proteins so early in your process. Stick with lean Proteins always, and a little further out, a fattier meat would be okay every now an then.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
