I created this group to be a private place where those of us who have chosen Dr. Almanza can support one another and share tips and experiences. I am scheduled for my VSG on March 27 and I'm happy to finally be doing this for myself :smile1: Welcome!

I've set the group so that only approved members can read or post on the forum, by the way. I chose Dr. Almanza because he seems to have many successful, happy patients and because, paying for this surgery out of my own pocket, the clinic is what I can afford. But it seems that whenever Dr. Almanza is mentioned, people want to jump in with criticisms of the clinic because it's small and not a real hospital. I want a safe place where those who are ACTUALLY his patients can discuss the pros and cons of their experiences honestly and opening without a lot of extra noise and controversy :)

I appreciate the invite. I hope everyone writes down their personnel journal in their adventure with gastric sleeve surgery with Dr Almanza, the guest house, hotels, and what you did while down there as far as shopping and etc. Good luck to everyone!

Well I am 7 days post op today! I had a great experience. The clinic is awesome and very very clean! My mom was even impressed. We arrived there and had our blood work done then went up and talked to the administrator who is awesome. Waited to have my EKG done then waited to get sleeved. I was the last one out of three of us cause I had the largest BMI. So around 4 pm I went in. Spent the first night in the clinic hooked up to the IV and trying to sleep. The gas is the hardest thing about that night and the next night. The next morning we were taken to the recovery house which is also very clean. I was very uncomfortable with all the gas pain so I didnt stay put too long but thats good cause the more you move round the more gas you pass. Keep that in mind. I walked the street up and down while still attached to th e IV. You need to get through 2 bags of IV before they will let you take it off the second day. I was the first one to get it out Ya for me! So I went shopping with some people although I spent most of the time in the van lol.,You are weak. Then went back to the recovery house and went to bed. I asked for a sleeping pill and the nurse said it would knock me out for about 4 hours. I took it at 9 pm and He had to wake me up at 7:30 lol. It was the best sleep ever. So We had to drink the purple crap and then head for the xray department and get those done. You have to drink some more stuff.... just plug your nose and gulp it down. Bring a great tasing gum with you so you can put it in your mouth as soon as your done. It doesnt taste good but the gum helps. Then you go back to the clinic so the doc can see your xrays and then head back to the recovery house. I opted to leave that day and go back to SanDiago. I went shopping for a bit then had another great sleep in the hotel. We stayed at the Hampton inn. THe beds are comfortable like you woudn't believe but there is a train that goes by so they provide ear plugs.. truthfully it didnt bother me at all. then the next day I flew home to Canada. Make sure you get wheelchair assistance especially when you have long ways to walk caues I would never have made it in my condition. Now I am still gassy so I am working on this and I am having problems getting Water down ( but I never liked water anyway) so Popcicles are my thing... Vitamin water is good too. So I see my doctor today and I am hoping to get some of my stiches out. So I will let you know how it goes from there. so since my 2 week preop diet til today I have lost 20 pounds!

Congratulations and thanks so much for sharing your experience! :) Did you spend the night in San Diego the third night after your surgery? I'm tempted to do that too. I'm also going to be flying back to Canada after the surgery. Was there a lot of walking at the airport in San Diego? I'm a bit nervous because I occasionally tend to have low blood pressure and faintness and I'm going to be traveling alone...

Loved reading your account and I'm so excited for you!

The Denver airport is huge! That's the one I was thankful I was in a wheelchair. If your traveling alone I would Definatly ask for wheelchair assistance cause you get put ahead of everyone cause they have to take you and if I didn't have it I would never have made it to my next flight on time. They will take you right to your gate. In Denver we were at gate 12 and had to go to gate 84 too long to walk with sore stomach. I stayed one night in the clinic one night in the recovery house and one night in the hotel! So the third night I was in the hotel! I could have stayed in Mexico but I wanted to do a bit of shopping! My mom was with me and she ended pushing me around in the wheelchair cause believe me you are weak! If you can have someone go with you I would suggest it! I know some people don't but it is a great help! I also suggest you do a liquid diet for two weeks before cause it helps with the gas.

Proud Mama....I didn't think we could have gum. I am a huge gum junkie and this like music to my ears!!! I am really excited to begin my journey!!! I'm scheduled for May 31st. I have been trying to research as much as possible so I'll know what to expect and how to handle it! Any advise from the pros would be much appriciated!!!

I've also been reading up on the stay at the recovery house vs. the Hotel Tuscan (?). They say the recovery house is very crowed and can be loud. I worry about the comfort of my guest there.....however.....I also hear that if you stay at the hotel you must ride back and forth twice daily to the recovery house for your meds and/or pain killers and that could be a deal breaker for me.

Anyone with advise?

The recovery house is a bit crowded but I didn't find it loud. However, I think that if you have a guest, the guest, at least, will have to stay at Hotel Ticuan ... I'm pretty sure there were no guests staying at the recovery house. Hope that helps :)

I had gum the second day after my surgery. sugar free of course lol. I am a baby and had I not had that gum after drinking the drink at the clinic I would have thrown up I think lol. It just gets rid of the awful taste that's all. It was sugar free and your not eating it do I didn't see why not. I know before the surgery it's not recommended but I did it after. Maybe ask just to be sure. I just went ahead and did it.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
