Drinking While Eating

Recommended Posts

This past couple days I haven't gotten sick. Thank GOD. Either I learned to chew extremely slowly or I am only eating stuff that I already know its good for my sleeve.

Well today I tried eating some pork and when I felt full I stopped. A couple minutes after dinner I tried taking a sip of my tea and it all came back up. I can't drink while or right after eating no matter what. I heard its actually helpful to drink while eating because it helps things slide. Is that true or just true for some people??

And about when were you able to drink while eating or right after?? Is this going to be forever or will things get better?? I really missing drinking while I am eating or right after. It has been one of the hardest adjustments for me :(

Thank you

My doctor says I can drink right up until my first bite, but have to wait an hour after the last bite before I can take a drink. I don't like it either, but it's part of the deal. I know I have to follow the rules. It stinks, but we will get used to it.

I work for my surgeon, and we always tell our pts to stop drinking 15 min before you start eating and do not drink til 30 minutes after. I have been following that and it really does work!!

Hope this helps, thats one nice thing working for my surgeon that did mine because I can ask questions anytime.

I have to wait 30 minutes after I drink to eat and 30 minutes after I eat to drink...it's the worse part of the sleeve for me, but sooooo worth it.

I do the 30 minute rule on both sides of a meal as well. And it's been tough, but worth it. A few nights ago, I took a drink within 5 minutes or so of finishing my meal and I vomitted. That's the first time for me, and I plan to make it the last time as well.

As everyone else said

NoNoNo drinking while eating :nono:

You must wait about 15-30 minutes after you drink before you eat.

You must wait about 30-45 minutes after you eat before you can have a drink.

These are the rules kiddo - you must follow the rules to be a happy & successful camper in sleeve land

Kathy

those are the rules for sure. But I drink with meals and I drink carbonated beverages and I have no problems. I am not encouraging this I am just sharing how this works for me and some other sleevers.

When I eat too fast or too much and start to feel like I'm going to vomit-I find that taking a few sips of Water helps things to settle down. Funny how the opposite is true for many.

My Doctor is so adament about the no drinking rule-that he told me that he has stopped drinking during his meals also, even tho he has not had WLS.

Sometimes for Breakfast I do drink milk. I don't see how that is different than if I had milk on Cereal. But that;s just my opinion.

I understand the reasons behind not drinking while eating-but it's hard to break a lifetime habit.

I have had a few sips while eating (generally when I'm eating something spicy and need a cool-down). In most cases I don't feel like it helps my food go down - it actually feels unpleasant, like the liquids are sitting on top of whatever I just ate. So I'm not really inclined to want to drink while eating. My nutritionist doesn't care if I drink right up to the point that I begin eating, just advises to not drink during or 30 mins after.

Part of the no drinking thing is you are washing the nutrients down faster and they arent getting absorbed into your body. It is a hard rule to get used to but worth it We can only eat a little bit of food it is worth it to just not drink so your body is soaking up all it needs. Dont want to get malnutrition.

I also take small sips of something to drink with eating, and have pretty much all along. I take VERY small bites of the food. It actually helps me. Now, if I take too big of a bite especially of something dense, I can't drink for 20 or 30 minutes.

I'm not advocating to against your NUT or surgeon, but just sharing that it hasn't been an issue for me as long as I'm taking very small bites and chewing well.

those are the rules for sure. But I drink with meals and I drink carbonated beverages and I have no problems. I am not encouraging this I am just sharing how this works for me and some other sleevers.

My doctor had said the no drinking 30 minutes before or after, but I thought that was temporary. Well at least I know it won't go away and I better get used to it. Thank you guys.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
