Did It Hurt When They Removed The Staples?

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on Dec. 16th and I was suppose to have my staples removed on Dec. 30th (2 weeks post-op). But because of the holidays the soonest I could see the Dr. is Jan 9th (3 weeks 3 days post-op). Because of the extra week I'm a little worried about the staple removal hurting more. This was my first surgery and I have never broken anything so I'm still trying to gage my pain threshold. To tell the truth I don't even know the process used to remove the staples! Any suggestions? I just want to be better prepared so I don't see a weird tool and want to run, LOL!! bolt.gif

My mom had staples removed after a Tummy Tuck, it looked like a staple remover and she said it did not hurt at all. HTH!!

staple removal doesn't hurt at all - its significantly less of an ordeal than suture removal. Don't worry!

Where are your staples? My staples are in my abdominal area. They will not be removed. ;)

I had the same fear going into the Dr's office for my followup. I can tell you I was amazed the I felt literally nothing when the nurse pulled them out. I had 4 small incisions with staples (probably 9 staples total). Of course the nurse told me that sometimes it depends on who and how they take them out but I'm sure you will have no problems.

Some surgeons staple the incisions too :)

I had about 24 staples. They gave me the tool to take home and said I could remove them myself-proving it's not a big deal. However, I had an appointment with my PCP so I asked him to do it. I was about 2 weeks out. There was some tugging, but not pain (and I'm a big baby when it comes to pain).

The tool looked like a staple remover.

Thanks for all the replies! Feeling a little better about it now.

I have my incisions stapled. I know not all Docs do this but mine does.

Ouch! At home?! Well I'm glad your PCP took them out for you. I don't think I could do it myself. Starting to feel better about it since you said they removed 24 and you felt no pain. Thanks smile.png

I had 30 staples in my leg and my wife took them out with a pair of side cutter. For some reason she likes it when I'm in pain. : )

My doc stapled the incisions. By the time I got in to see him, some of the staples had scabbed over. It did sting when those came out. The rest, it felt like scratching an itch having them out. The overgrown ones did hurt a bit, though.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
