I was a diet coke junkie. 3-4 cans a day easily. After surgery I had horrible headache withdrawals. During Christmas I decided to have 1. I let it go flat and it was treat. Now I don't care for it anymore. I drink diet arizona green tea or buy the little packets of arizona pom tea and mix to my bottle of Water.< /p>

I was a Mt Dew Junkie, i drank mt dew from the time i was in 6th grade (1992) intill 2010. I gave it up cold turkey and lost 50 pounds. Then i found out i had hypothyroid disease, and the pounds kept creeping up so i said screw it and went to pepsi. I could drink 5 cans and 2 20oz a day. when i decided to have surgery i started weening myself off of them. about a month before my surgery i would have a mt dew here or there cause i thought i would never have them again, and i am sticking with that! They are way too much of a trigger!! I think Mt dew and i think Cookies cakes candy bars chips. I hope i am strong enough to stay away forever.

My addiction was Pepsi-full sugar, preferably fountain. I had tried weaning off several times, but it never lasted. So I decided this time I needed to go cold turkey. I drank them right up until midnight the day of surgery (yes, I know they aren't a clear liquid). Then that was it. I have read of several people who still drink soda's after surgery (my surgeon says "Never") but for me I think it has to be none. There have been several times when I have thought about how much I want one, but quickly realized that that was usually in a stressful situation. Ding! Ding! Ding! Pespis must be my Go To Comfort food. So that is all the more reason to stay away.

The only people I know who have failed with bypass or sleeve had gone back to sodas. So I think for me even one sip would be too much.

I too hope you can be strong enough to stay away forever. I, fortunately, have two small "Sheriffs" (granddaughters) who are right there to remind me should I ever even say the word "Pepsi".

I gave up my Mt Dews way before I had surgery. Probably around the time when I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, so about 2 yrs ago. Diet Mt Dew just wasn't the same for me. I started drinking Lipton Diet Green Tea, and I really like it. I am just as hooked on it as I was Mt Dew, so I have no desire to even have soda/mt dew now. I think Mt Dew contributed heavily to my gaining so much weight AND becoming Type 2 diabetic, so I regard it as the enemy now. It's a toxic relationship that I had to end forever, much like smoking and abusive boyfriends. My diabetes is resolved and I don't want it to come back!!

love my seltzer helps me get the Water in and sooo refreshing... my Doc never had a problem with it.. I dont drink as much coffee in the morning just look foward to that first siz... my doc says I am loosing at the same pace as a gastric bypass...Im happy all around...sometimes when I feel like a little flavor I go for a c/f diet soda... all aroud its good. just my opinion...

I was a diet Pepsi fanatic, and my doctor kept saying how full of chemicals and how unhealthy it is and everything, so I stopped drinking it cold turkey around beginning of November. ( my surgery was Dec. 14th). My docotr said it would not stretch your sleeve, he said it would cause may cause discomfort from too much gas from the carbonation. I have no desire to go back to it now and no longer have the nightly headaches that supposedly were sinus headaches that I had for years! Although since my surgery I cannot stand the taste of plain Water so I have to have it with crystal Light fruit punch flavor. I don't even like the lemonade or pink lemonade flavors since surgery. My taste buds have changed sooo much since surgery! has anyone else's tastebuds changed drastically?

My tastebuds changed drastically after surgery. I couldn't stand sweet anything for months. I'm sad to say that I like sweets again now, since about 4.5 months out. I also can't eat spicy food still. It's not my tastebuds; it's my sleeve that says no to that. :)

I like soda (regular, not diet) but it was never a trigger thing for me nor did I ever overindulge. Honestly I usually only drank soda when I had a hangover (preferably a fountain Coke from McDonalds!). Therefore, post-op it hasn't bothered me to have a few sips here or there - I'm staying away from caffeine but occasionally I'll have a few sips of my daughter's root beer or sprite. Doesn't make me want more or make me want anything else sweet.

Pre-op I was a sweet tea JUNKIE. I could drink 2 of those gigantic sweet teas from McAlister's, or a half&half sweet tea from McDonalds with at least a couple refills. I made some Decaf brewed tea at home and mixed with some Splenda - and realized I've lost my taste for tea almost completely. Totally weird.

I love Water so that's what I drink primarily - I can't stand the artificial sweetners in Crystal Light or any of the other drink mixes.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
