Popcorn After Gastric Sleeve Surgery....

Recommended Posts

Mmmm... Popcorn.. Okay. I am 4.5 months out now and I have had popcorn 3 times starting at 2.5 months. I don't keep it in the house because it's something I binged on pre-sleeve and I don't need that temptation, but on my occasional trips to the movie theater I always get a small bag. And YES, I butter liberally. If I'm going to cheat, it's going to be worth it. It IS a slider for me. I can eat a small bag in the rough 2 hours that I am in the theater and I have to go lighter on the butter if I'm not intending to share the bag because the fat content will nauseate me.

I love me some popcorn. I did buy one package of the Orville Redenbacher Movie Theatre popcorn for when I was watching my friends kids and I really enjoyed the little I had of that, but don't regularly stock it.

Yep, me too--I had popcorn at 3 months or so, just a few kernels from my husband's sack at the movies, and it was delicious. I couldn't eat much (and frankly didn't really want to), but I sure enjoyed it. Those few kernels of popcorn were really important from an "I'm still a normal person" perspective for me--it felt normal to be sharing popcorn in the movies, even if only a few pieces.

We love going to the movies, and we both enjoy the popcorn there. I usually take a little plastic 1-cup container with me in my purse, and I just scoop out some popcorn from the bag. This lets me enjoy just enough so that I don't feel guilty, and he can butter and salt to his preference, and I can enjoy mine plain (don't need the extra fat or sodium, thanks!).

That is a great idea to have a small container with you for portion control! I'll splurge a little and have the butter and salt, but I do like the idea of measuring out a small portion so I can keep track. I'm guilty of letting my hand sneak into my daughter's popcorn bag far too many times. :)

3 1/2 months out from surgery is when I grabbed my 1st bag. The blessing of the sleeve is that although I purchased a monster size bag of white cheddar cheese popcorn - it took over a week to finish the bag! Crazy! Prior to surgery - that bag would have been consumed within an hour or two. Now it takes an entire flipping week eating it Breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner!

Omg!! I am working on a bag now! I bought it like 3 days ago...big black bag of white cheddar cheese popcorn...my favorite before surgery...and yes...by now, it would have been gone!!!LOL.... So far I've had a total of three handfuls...that's one handful a day, mind you...and that's all I can tolerate!! It's so funny but it just gives me ANOTHER reason to be thankful for this sleeve!!! When I get closer to goal next year, I might add the moscato!! ;-)

As much as i like popcorn i am staying well away from it. I had my surgery on 13th August 2014 and developed a tear in my stomach and after going septic and almost dying twice plus being fed through a nj tube until last week, i can safely say i am sticking to what my docs have told me to do. I got out of hospital Christmas eve and i don't plan on going back so unfortunately popcorn is just going to have to wait. Please be careful with your food. I was and still ended up very sick which makes me worry what might happen to someone starting foods too soon or pushing their limits.

I ate some 6 weeks out, no issues. My Dr cleared me for all foods excluding fried and sweet foods, and carbonated beverages.

popcorn is my go to snack! I make it old school in a pot with coconut oil and then sprinkle some lemon pepper and ground red pepper on it. I don't miss the butter at all. It's delicious!

i ate popcorn yestrday and im only 2 weeks out! It accually settled better than most mushy stuff

Against my Drs orders, I have been eating popcorn nearly daily since about a week after my surgery. You can eat alot more popcorn than other foods since it squishes down real small when chewed up good. I am probably only eating 4 oz, but it seems like alot!!

I find it to be a very satisfying snack. Never bothers my tummy.

Yikes!!

That post was made in 2011. I would check with your doc before eating it. The husks can get lodged in the staple line.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
