Water/fluid Intake

Recommended Posts

Hey guys! What does everyone count as a part of their daily Water intake? Just straight up water or do you count you water based Protein Shakes, milk, milk based Protein shakes and broths? I hit a stall 2 weeks out, so I am curious if I need to switch some stuff up!

Hi Ateam

I believe Water loss consists of all you said, Water based shake, milk, broth.

i'm pretty sure when you don't have that much to lose, like you, its harder to lose those final lbs.

Good luck

I count all those things as Fluid intake. I just weight myself and i actually gained 6 oz. I am at a stall right now and looking for ways to switch up my diet also. I am going to start increasing my exercise now. LOL ;) this is what I should have been doing all along ;)

hi fellow sleevers

Here's my H20 question

i'm still on my liquids post-op -DOS 12/15/11 - what i'm really afraid of is that i'm drinking too fast/ too much which might hurt my sleeve. We were always told to sip, sip etc., i thought this was because that was the "rule" and we wouldn't be able to drink faster without "hurting" our sleeve..

I saw my NUT on Friday and told her i had tried a couple of times to drink more than a sip without a problem - and she said as long as my stomach was "handling" it, no problem.

she said if i don't have to sip thats ok too .Many people can't do more than sip, but if i can do more thats ok too. I'm soooo not gulping or anything, i tell my DH to watch me drink, and he says it looks like a long sip, but not a gulp.

What i'm afraid of is this - by the end of my Protein shake i'm full, but maybe i can't tell if I'm full earlier and should have stopped. (the sleeve should tell me if i'm full, but what if i don't realize it?

I haven't even done solids yet and i'm worried i won't hear my sleeve when i'm supposed to.

Maybe I'm saying this wrong, but.....please advice, i'm alittle worried. BTW this goes for my broth too which i love. thanx As the saying goes i doing want to "stretch" my sleeve ." I know that really can't happen but..............

thanx for your help

kathy

too funny,

i was looking at a couple of earlier posts, i saw one about Water that really looked similar to what i wrote above - well it turns out that i wrote the same post 2 days ago about the Water, just worded differently.

i guess i'm really concerned about my situation about drinking/gulping water, that i didn't realize i had already written something 2 days ago.smile.png

biggrin.pngstill overly concerned about my drinking, but i'll survive

Here's the thing.. in the beginning, for some extended length of time (I've heard 4 weeks, 6 weeks, or even as long as 3 months) your sleeve is swollen from the surgery. This means it's possible that liquids can fill it up. However, it's also probably numb since a lot of nerves were severed during surgery, so it's conceivable that it won't be transmitting "full" signals the way it will be once it's fully healed.

I am almost 1 month out and I'm just now starting to sense a stretching "full" signal from my stomach. Before then, all I was getting was sort of a "backing up" feeling in the back of my throat, which was uncomfortable.

At my surgeons office we are not allowed to count anything towards liquid except the following:

Water

non-caloric

non-carbonated

and non-caffeinated

So really that is pretty much Water (or flavored water like crystal light), broths, sugar-free popsicles, sugar-free Jello, Decaf coffe/tea etc.

They have specifically told me milk, Protein shakes (water or milk based) and anything else along those lines do NOT count towards fluids.

That's my office though, yours may be different

In the beginning months I logged everything I drank, excluding anything with caffeine as it is a diuretic. So, Jello, popsicles, Protein shakes, crystal lights or just plain Water would all go into the tally.

Now that I'm further out I no longer tally all the fluids I get in. I just make sure I'm getting a minimum of 84 Oz of plain Water in per day and I'm fine. Whatever else I drink is just bonus. On really good days I'll drink a gallon or more of water per day.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
