I live in Tulsa, and am using Dr. Broussard. I am supposed to have my pre-op appointment tomorrow and my surgery 3/5. Anyone else in Tulsa using/used Weight Wise? If so, are you still driving to Edmond for group meetings or have you found some closer than you are able to attend?

My husband and a couple of friends are the only people who know of my decision to have WLS surgery. No one is supportive right off the bat, but after I share my journey, they still disagree but ultimately just want me to be happy.

At this point, I am leaning on just keeping my decision private. This was a hard decision for me to reach, and it's even more difficult to be defending my choice to everyone. Has anyone else experienced this? Ultimately, what I've notice is that no one in my current support system is educated enough on WLS to give me the approval/support I am looking for...

I am in Northern OK and had surgery with Dr. Broussard on the 12th. I'm in OKC several times a month so I plan my visits for days I can go to support group. Which I have found very helpful. I have told very few people about my surgery.....I've been lucky that the people I have shared with have been very supportive.

I had surgery with Dr. Broussard Oct. 30. I tried the support group at Bailey in Owasso and thought it was pretty much worthless. I'd love to go to the meetings in Edmond but I just can't take a half-day off work every month to go to those. So for now, this forum is my support group. I also stay in touch with Chris (nutritionist) frequently with questions I might otherwise bring up in a support group.

Did anyone who is self-pay get offered/purchase any of the BLIS insurance packages or wish you would have?

I was offered the packages but declined. Since I had no complications, I'm glad I declined. If I'd had complications, I might feel otherwise. :-)

I live in Northeast OK.. Claremore, I too have insurance that covers zero weight loss

( Community Care).. I chose the Mexico route as well after watching this group and researching for months.. I am happy with my decision as many people in my life aren't .. But they also have not felt the constant failure and desperation that we all have.. I backed out last year already due to money but now I'm back on.. APRIL 8th!

GO OKIES

I will be having my surgery at Bailey Medical Center in Owasso, when I get to that point (just started my journey January 2nd).....I'm required to attend at least 2 support group meetings (1 before surgery, 1 after) and have not been yet. Why did you think the one at Bailey's was worthless?

There was very little support at the two meetings I went to. It was basically Dr. Kirk talking about all the new wonderful things coming to Bailey -- new nurses, computer systems, etc. Then a 15-minute session where he opened it up for questions. People wouldn't ask questions, and then he randomly picked people to talk to. Which was incredibly awkward. My idea of a support group is people talking to one another about physical and emotional problems that are the result of their surgery and getting help with those problems. That didn't happen the two times I went. Maybe it's not always like that. :-) Also, the vast majority of the topics discussed related to gastric bypass, which may be because that's mostly what they do. I don't want to discourage you, though. Maybe I just went to two "unusual" meetings.

Good luck Kimmie! I had surgery at Bailey this past Thursday. Everyone with that group is fantastic. All the office staff, doctors, nurses, and Dr. Katsis and great. There would probably be some things they should work on. But, all in all, it was a good experience. If you can call any surgery a good experience. Lol......If you need to know something just ask. I will try to answer. Again, congrats!!

Oh, wow....I agree with you about what support meetings should be. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with Bailey's. I guess I will see how it goes for me when I go to one:)

That's great to hear! I have a friend and a couple of coworkers that had their sleeve done at Bailey's also; they had nothing but good things to say as well. They did not have Dr. Katsis, but he is actually the surgeon I will be meeting with next month. So, it's good to hear you say he's great:)

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!
