Gastric Sleeve Surgery Without 2 Week Pre-op Diet?

Recommended Posts

"My surgeon said he didn't originally have the pre-op diet requirement, but changed his policy when a patient gained TWENTY-FIVE pounds in the two weeks before surgery by having a non-stop food funeral."

"Food funeral." What a great phrase! My surgeon requires two weeks of a preop diet (three Protein shakes a day), but since I have a BMI of 35, I can have two drinks and a tiny low-carb meal. My surgery date is December 14th.

I did a 24 hour diet before my surgery. I just couldn't see doing liquids for two weeks I would have went crazy.

Funny the variation. My doc's assistant told me at my BMI and with sleeve I shouldn't have to do a pre-op diet, but when I went for my appointment with the dietician, she gave me one -- boooo!

I did not do the two week pre-op because my MBI was 36 and the doctor didn't think I needed it. He said that he was a little surprised because my liver was somewhat enlarged. I did do a liquid diet for two days prior to the surgery.

I did not do the pre op just fasted for two days...I was suppose to do it but didn't...I lost 16lbs last month with a 3lb gain for Thanksgiving...

I also went on a food "funeral" - for a few weekssad_smile.gifi gained 11 lbs. i was so upset. but my dr. didn't really say much about it. He never put me on a liquid diet or anything - my DOS is 12-15-11.

So I put myself on a "self induced" diet a few days ago to primarily liquids., I will continue this til my surgery 12/15/11 I want to lose that extra weight i gained before my surgery.

But i still "sneak" in some popcorn once in a while.nono.gif

i wonder if it makes any difference to our healing process with how we behave before surgery. say being able to eat normally till 24 hours preop vs. eating low carb for a week vs. fluids only for a week.

It didn't make any difference to my healing process. I had a ton of food funerals, no pre-op diet and I am recovering beautifully. I was able to eat until 4pm the afternoon before!

I also did not have a pre-op diet, just the day before surgery scrambled eggs for Breakfast then liquids the rest of the day and surgery was at 6am next morning...

My surgical group doesn't require a pre-op diet, just 24 hours of liquids only prior to surgery and no food/liquids after midnight the night before.

I don't have a 2 week pre-op diet, but I am doing it anyway. I started today. If I am dying, then I will have a piece of Protein (most likely a boca burger), but otherwise I am doing pretty much the same diet I will be doing for the first few weeks after surgery.

Wow.......... I want some of your Dr's pre-op requests. :-( I had no time for any "Food Funerals" or even getting in anything special. My Dr requires a 5% weight loss, which I had done before approval and then a 2 week liquid diet. Fortunately I only had 11 days from approval to surgery. I so wanted a "last supper", but couldn't decide which one, so skipped it. Just three more days!! Soup for Christmas dinner is boring. but it will be all worth it.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
