I'm Bulimic And Getting Vsg

Recommended Posts

I just finished my psych eval. I passed and the doctor is also going to take me on as her patient after surgery! I love therapy! Everyday my life is about family, work, and most of all - my twin 5 year olds. To have a solid hour once a week that is about only ME is great. I can't wait!

I've done the whole BS a therapist gig in my past (forced to see a therapist young after my mother passed away) and I know for a fact that doesn't help. We all got to our weights for a reason - we all have a food addiction or eating disorder. We have all overeatten and been depressed about it.

You are not alone in this struggle but don't for a minute think having surgery will "fix" your bulimia. You need to put the work in. And we will all be here to support you!

Good luck :)

I see people every day on this site post that they are going CRAZY because they are not losing weight "fast enough" or are on a stall... What am I doing wrong? What can I do to start losing weight again? What can I do to lose faster? ...and generally feeling out of control of their bodies and life experience. The sleeve does help us to lose weight and if we follow the rules, and have faith in the process, and develop patients and a long view, it works. If you have a chronic go-to like purging or starving or overexercising or using sugars as a sedation drug... the temptation to practice them will still be intense! This is not to keep you away from researching the sleeve, but to really understand that it is not a quick fix! It is not brain surgery. Best of luck to you, and surgery may be great for you to lose weight... just make sure you have the other stuff in hand first.

Either you want it candy coated or straight up? I think when you said "No my surgeon does not require a mental evaluation, but I have been through enough therapists and counselors to BS my way out of anything"...I find that sort of disturbing. I am a firm believer in therapy if you have a "disorder". I am in therapy for my ED..what's the point of lying? So you can have surgery? Then you've lied to the psych and yourself and 1 surgery later you still have an eating disorder. Till you get your head in the right place and face the issues you have by getting into some good therapy and give them no "BS", you will still have the same issues. It's like trying to fix a broken leg by pulling your tooth.

There's a reason that almost all the surgeons require a psych eval before surgery. It's not just to make extra money. If you aren't upfront and honest with your surgeon then you are setting yourself up to fail. Many people regain their weight a few years after surgery because they don't deal with the underlying issues. Please don't go into this believing that the surgery will fix the problems in your head.

I do not have experience with bulimia, but I was under the impression that bulimia was a contradiction to weight loss surgery. Most of the guidelines for weight loss surgery limit it people over 40 BMI or over 35 with comorbidities. I guess the reason for this is that it is a very drastic step! I guess it is obvious - but this is a permanent removal of part of your stomach. It would really suck to do it and still struggle with the gain/loss cycle because of the underlying bulimia issues.

I am very sympathetic to how useless counselors are though - I really have lost faith in talk therapy. I get more out of talking to supportive friends. I did find EMDR to be a very useful treatment for post traumatic stress, but I am not sure if treatments like that are useful for eating disorders.

Hope you find support in resolving this. I am glad you shared this with us here, and I would encourage you to share this with your surgeon before you are operated on. Take care

This is a support board but there are a lot of veterans on here who we also rely on for good, sound advice (and not a bunch of candy-coated BS). For your health, I would STRONGLY recommend counseling for the underlying eating disorder before jumping right to surgery. At the very worst, if you don't follow the protocols of the post-surgical diet and binge shortly thereafter, you could have serious, serious implications to your health due to a leak or rupture of your staple line. At the very least, you'll quickly learn to binge around your sleeve and you will not help solve the underlying problem.

I'm sure I can speak for many in this community when I wish you the best of luck, but also hope that you take the time to evaluate what this will mean for you before making a rash decision.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
