Pre Gastric Sleeve Op Problems

Recommended Posts

Hello! So today is my second day on the pre op diet. I'm supposed to have 5 to 6 Protein Shakes a day and that's it! The nutritionist said I may have non starchy vegies if I'm starving. Yesterday I did fine. Today however, has been a nightmare. I have had a headache all day (I kinda expected that), I've been dizzy, and threw up twice. I only had 3 shakes. I just ate half a cup of green Beans. I hope it works! I just hate that I'm already having problems. I stil have 7 more days of this to go! Has anyone else been through something similar? I believe my blood sugar dropped. I'm feeling really discouraged. Any advice or encouragement is welcomed! Thanks!

Are you allowed to have broth? Sometimes the headaches are really the result of the sodium reduction and maybe some broth would get you through the feeling bad. Also, drink lots of water!

She didn't say broth. She said I could have that the day before surgery as I'll be on Clear Liquids then. She only said I could have the non starchy vegetables. Which I just thew up. I'm trying to drink Water, but I've been throwing that up too. This is so upsetting :(

Are you also withdrawing from caffeine or artificial sweeteners? If so, the first three days are somewhat tough. I suggest you call the nutritionist back and ask if you can drink broth. I could/can handle broth even on days when the Protein shakes just make me want to gag. Also ask her if you can use other kinds of shakes and/or crystal light (for the artificial sweetener). I was also allowed Kelloggs K2O Protein drinks both pre and post op. I got really sick of sweet stuff really fast, which I think is one of the points of the liquid diet. It creates an aversion to sweets, IMO.

Some Protein Shakes are much better than others. Also, Protein shake has a lot of definitions, unless they are making you drink one particular kind. Do you have a Vitamin Shoppe nearby? If so, you can buy single Protein Shakes and try them to see if one or another is easier for you to drink.

Try heating or cooling the shake. Sometimes it's easier to eat if you can pretend it's hot chocolate or pudding. The texture change helps some people.

Click Espresso flavor (available through Amazon) is one of my favorites and I add it to Decaf coffee. Walmart sells a couple of different brands of whey isolate Protein that are decent. I don't have any here or I'd give you the brand names. Look in the HBA section near the pharmacy.

Good luck on your journey!! :)

Oh, and are your nerves just on edge? That might explain the vomiting. If so, diet or not, make yourself a nice cup of hot Decaf tea and take a warm bath and relax. You will get through this and you will be FINE!! :) And, I mean that in both ways! :)

Thanks so much for your advice! I was only allowed to choose from 4 types of Protein Drinks. The one I chose is GNC 100% whey because the other three you can only get online. I do not drink coffee or use artificial sweetners or anything. I've heard of people going through CARB withdraw, and that could be it, I just didn't expect the vomiting :/ I don't feel nervous or any of that. I'm hoping as you said, that the first three days are the worst. I am going to try mixing my Protein drinks with Water tomorrow to see if that helps. Also, if I don't feel better by Monday, I'll call the nutritionist back. Thanks again for your help and encouragement!

Oh and by the way, I don't have a problem getting the Protein Shakes down at all. It was later that the nautiousness hit. I actually haven't even been that hungry so far. I'm grateful for that.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
